You CAN nickle plate steel you know.  Does the expense of chasing down a brass plate balance against knowing that it really is brass or bronze under that plating?  Your call, but I went the easy way and nickled a steel plate.  Done correctly, it really is indistinguishable.

Until you stick a magnet to it. And yes, the expense is worth it when it is used to restore an original high-wall.

I am in the process of borrowing a Win large swiss buttplate which I intend to have duplicated in brass to later have nickle plated.  If any of you fellows have a need for one, I can have one made for you at the same time.  You will need to let me know.  They will be sand cast and I can get either brass or white bronze (polishes up nice and looks very similar to nickle).  I'm told that the shrinkage from the original will be around 3%.  There are plenty of steel ones out there for sale already.

Let me know if you have an interest.  When I get a rough idea of how many of you are interested, I can get a price.  They will only cost what the foundry charges plus shipping.  I'm not intending on making anything out of the deal except for the fact that the more I have done, the less each will cost.
Thanks
Phil

Can you post a picture of the Swiss butt plate you are having duplicated?

You may need to allow for shrinkage if casting using an original for a pattern. Just a thought.

Brent is correct ---- Reliable Electroplating Co. in Chartly, Mass. does a black nic. plate which is the exact same plating solution used on the early single shot rifles & Colt SAA pistols.  I would strongly reccomend you use this co. for your plating !   Metalife is an excelent plating but leaves a stainless appearence.    FWIW,    Ken

Hello Phil,

Thanks, that is the standard sized Swiss butt plate used on the Model 1885.  I would like to have several of them.

I am looking for a couple myself, and would be interested if they are good quality castings.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!
