Thanks for that. All is a little clearer, now. Smiley

Here I was thinkin' it was something to do with the way the forend was set up, or something along those lines. 

I could see how the copper color would stand out a bit better in some circumstances.
Of course, the patent files are full of guys that had better ideas....

FWIW, I have a Krag carbine with a front sight made from an old silver dime.  Probably correct for the period.  Numismatists cringe, but the milled edge looks kind of neat.
