Winder Musket Breach Block Markings
Apr 27th, 2008 at 9:43pm

I had my Hiwall Winder Musket apart today for cleaning and I noticed the markings on the breach block.  It was stamped with a 22 on the right hand side and the left hand side was stamped .005.  Does anyone know the significant of the .005 marking?  Is it related to headspace?

'deed it is!  That number should have had a + or a - with it, and they were indeed used for assembling rimfire high-walls with minimal headspace.  I have never seen these markings on any but the .22 high-walls, though.

Thanks for the reply Froggie.  I have had it apart several times but never payed any attention to it before.  There is a dash in front of the .005 so I assume by your description it is a minus sign.  I tried to post a picture but the attachment gods are not coorperating.  I knew someone would have the answer in their hip pocket. Smiley  Thanks again.

That's the same mark I was referring to.  I believe it is described and explained to some degree in Campbell's second book on 'walls, but my copy is on loan to a very good friend right now, so I can't look it up for you.  Maybe somebody else has a copy handy.

Froggie,
I have been sitting here for an hour with both volumes of Campbell and cannot find your reference.  Yes, I opened the books and looked through them.  I even tried the indices.  I am sure you are correct, but I have had no luck so far.

The number is the headspace dimension change from the standard. I've seen this dimension marked on every Winder low wall block I've ever owned or disassembled, and indeed it indicates a headspace dimension that's tighter by approxomately the indicated amount. Most blocks have also shown a vertical slash through the horizontal mark, appearing to change the 'minus' sign into a 'plus' sign.

I've used these 0.005" blocks in several cases to achieve much tighter headspace, they're handy.
Good luck, Joe

Waterman,

John may have put that info in his old column in SSR Journal, or I may have seen it elsewhere, but since I don't have access right now to my copies of his books I'll just have to say I don't know.  From the info posted by JDS, my info was apparently correct, it's just that I am unsure about my source.  Huh

Well, you made me go look.  I checked my Hiwall Winder musket and there are markings but not like what is described.  On one side is the number 22.  On the other is a square with the number 1 inside.  Below that is a triangle with the number 1 inside.  Just to the right of the triangle is a capitol "C " .  This side looks like proof marks.  Frank M.
