Our breech movement forms a direct resistance at a right angle to the line of recoil, against heavy charges. Without our movement, the Ballard gun cannot offer the necessary resistance to heavy charges of powder. For this reason, they have not as yet made a 40 calibre gun to shoot 90 grains of powder; the strain is so great. Consequently, they have made cartridges to suit the gun.

So quotes the Single Shot Exchange from a copy of the 1879 Freund Brothers catalog. What is this modification they made?

In the Ballard, the breech thrust is taken up by the receiver on a surface not at right angles to the bore, and this should create some downward thrust on the support from the lever. De Haas in one of his later books (Potpourri) offered some ideas on reinforcing this support. Freund's 1879 patent for a Ballard modification doesn't show any such strengthening. It appears they did modify the angle at which the breech meets the receiver, but this may only have been in the imagination of the person who made the drawing.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

If I remember correctly, Freund's desgin was a breechblock that was hammerless to speed up the lock time, plus it not only cammed up inside the rear of the frame like original Ballards, but also locked up between the barrel and the rear edge of the receiver opening.
The larger area that extended above the receive to hold the concealed hammer, made the breecblock a bit stronger due to the mass of the part that extended above the action. It was over twice as long as a normal Ballard breechblock in this area, plus a bit taller.
