I watched Ron Long win a 1000 yard long range match at Raton in 1992. He used a 40/65 with the 18 inch twist. 400 grain spitzer bullets.

I've shot match's at 800 and a 1000 yards with my 40/65  18 twist rifle.

That was a while back, but it worked fine then. The 14 and 16 may be better . Dont count the 18 twist out.    Wink

I should add that I was using duplex loads in my rifle. The velocity was 1425 fps with the 400 grain spitzer.

Got aholt of quite a lot of PMC 40-65 ammo, 260 grain lead.   Thinking of rebarreling a 45-70 Marlin and making a short range deer rifle.  Would appreciate suggestions as to twist - 1/16 and 1/18 seem unnecessarily fast.

If you don't intend to shoot anything heavier than 320 gr, a 24 twist would be fine. In looking up 40 cal twist rates in old Lyman manuals, Winchester's 40/82 used a 260 gr bullet and a 28 twist. I found no listing for 40/65.

Am happy with my 14.5" twist. Shoots just fine with bullets as heavy as 425gr.

Don't consider anything slower than 16", and 14.5" is good for the longer bullets and longer ranges.
