  I believe the current official targets are a much lighter color red than the old ones. Who do we petition to get the darker color back? i cannot see the light colored target with iron sights. Thanks! Joe S

Most of the important targets (yeah, I know they're ALL important, but you know what I mean) are available in a version that is black on the back and red on the front, and they can be shot either face forward.  The red color is so that bullet holes show up better in your spotting scope, while it is pretty much acknowledged that black is better for iron sights.  That was the story I heard when I first started shooting and ordering targets, so I'm sticking to it.  I haven't noticed that much difference in various vintages of red target faces, but then again, I usually hit more in the white anyway!  Roll Eyes

Joe,

  I have the same problem you have. The "red" I like best is that which they use on the NMLRA targets. Seems to have some black in it but not enuf to make it hard to see the bullet holes. You can see it with iron sights and also spot your bullet holes. The WSU targets are almost as good.

At our regional Schuetzenfest in Eau Claire, we only get one choice, a very light red, which is almost impossible to see, at least for me, so I would like to know what it would take to go back to a darker color. Joe S

try a blue filter in your rear aperture. It turns the red black.

The targets at Eau Claire ISSA regional are ISSA targets.
We use ASSRA for our ASSRA matches.

The printer is supposed to use the same mix ink, but over the years they have gone to different ink base and ingredients, I do think that is why the colors seem lighter to the eye. Who knows for sure.

Back when the targets were finalized the old folks went over gobs of test prints and shades, in the thought of standardizing the targets.
I guess it has to do with everybody shooting at the same color for records or something.

But the stock makes big differences

         I have some old ISSA targets that are printed on one side only and they do have a slightly lighter red. The ASSRA target is black on one side and red on the other and shooting with Iron's I can't see either red as well as I'd like.   leadball

I sure am going to try a blue filter, I know the red one that does away with the bull makes it easier to find hard to see bullets strikes in the red.

Westerner,  is there a certain number filter that is best?

Black is obviously the best way to go, and thats what I would prefer. Being able to see bullet holes is not of much value if you cant see the target because if you cant see the target you wont need to worry about seeing bullet holes. Joe S

Then someone got the idea of making some use of the unused back and printed a Red target on the back. Some of us are traditional and prefer to shoot Black targets. It really is a shame to spoil all those Red targets on the back. Still working on a cure for that. Regards, FITZ. Grin

All you have to do is back off on the powder charge so that the bullets only hit on one side of the target. After the match, you can gather your targets up and then use them for practice shooting on the other side. Seems clear to me (LOL)

  And don't forget to pick up all that Lead where they drop in front of the target and re-use it. What a wonderful idea you've got! Will try it at the first opportunity.  Smiley What with the price of Lead what it is just think of the money we can save!!!!

Or you could follow a well-known shooter's example, and use someone's staple gun for a backstop!

In all seriousness, I've heard that some folks in some organizations have actually refused to allow targets that didn't have precisely the proper color bull, even though the scoring rings were identically-sized with the 'legal' or 'proper' targets and even came from the same source. Go figure. Doesn't make any sense to me, especially since even the printer can't seem to keep the colors straight!
