Or you could follow a well-known shooter's example, and use someone's staple gun for a backstop!
In all seriousness, I've heard that some folks in some organizations have actually refused to allow targets that didn't have
precisely
the
proper
color bull, even though the scoring rings were identically-sized with the 'legal' or 'proper' targets and even came from the same source. Go figure. Doesn't make any sense to me, especially since even the printer can't seem to keep the colors straight!

Just an observation from a bystander, regards, Joe
I have to agree wiff ya Mr Steele..Thats why I like BPCR long range..The targets are all the same color...A light shade of "fuzzy".

I sure am going to try a blue filter, I know the red one that does away with the bull makes it easier to find hard to see bullets strikes in the red.
Westerner, is there a certain number filter that is best?
Keith, I dont know what number will work best. Gary Miller gave me a piece of blue plastic to use a few years ago. It works great. It sits between the eyepiece and the rubber shade on my Anschutz rear sight.
Wished I had the same setup on all my rifle's. It doesnt have to be very dark to turn the red bull a nice black.

I've used a medium green filter to sharpen/darken the red, especially on the ISSA light red targets.

I am under the impression that any colored filter on your sight (but not eyeglasses) will take you out of the traditional rifle/sight class, am I correct? Thanks! Joe S

I'm not aware of a traditional rifle or sight class in the ASSRA rules.
I think ISSA and WSU and NRC do. Too much to keep track of !!

The old tang sights were never made to hold diopters or filters. A piece of colored sheet plastic can be fashioned to cover the forward hole of the eye piece. You'll need optical quality sheet plastic and a pair of scizzors, and some imagination. I dont know where ya get the plastic. All the sheets Ive looked through, looked like looking through a dirty aquarium.

From the "old" rule book. Don't know about the "new" rule book...
Section 1.21 Iron Sights
Iron sights are sights without any optical elements. An exception to this is a rear sight disk that will hold a lens that is equivalent to the shooter’s eye glass prescription. At the Schuetzenmesiter’s discretion diopters of this type with or without color filters and/or lenses similar to the shooter’s eyeglass prescription, may be used but only if an announcement to that effect is published in pre-match announcements. Diopter sights that incorporate an optical element in the front sight are specifically forbidden.

Old target sights both tang and German schuetzen sights were some times made to hold a colored and or magnifying lens. Some used a lens both front and rear to get a non tubed telescope.
The use of a lens in the rear sight that apromimiats
the shooters eye glass
'prescripion is permited in ASSRA matches. Colored filters are at the discretion of the Schuetzenmeister
diopters with a lens are not allowed in the front sight.

For opticaly coppect colored plastic try going to a theater lighting shop. Ask for a gell sheet. If you explane what you are doing the should be able to help. The sheets come in precise colors 1 sheet will take care of you and all your friends.

Or you might even get one of their books of small samples (usually about 1" x 3" or so and you could try a variety of colors until you find the perfect one to buy a larger sheet. As 40 Rod said, one sheet will provide filters for you and all of your friends (probably a lifetime supply for all of you, at that!
)
I'm guessing that blue or green will be the best for the purpose under discussion, but red will help you spot bullet holes on a red field through your spotting scope, and I would not ignore yellow... my shooting glasses in yellow seem to help. YMMV, of course.

laurie,
Do we still have a supply of the dark targets up at Eau Claire? If so, why cant we use the dark ones for iron sights and the light ones for scope? Just a thought, Joe
