Hi everyone ,

I picked up this Rifle approx one year ago from John Appleton & its been sitting in my Gun Safe , collecting rust  Embarrassed

BSA 12/15
Custom Stock
Lyman Rear Sight
International Front Globe
Heavy Barrel : Engraved " Eric Jonhson " : " . 22 Cal L R only  ":
Action Engraved : " 145 " Below Lever : " J "  on right Side Plate.
I just attached a " Lyman 15x Super Target Spot " to see how well it groups.

I would like to shoot it in some future " Smallbore Matches " , someone on another forum suggested that its set up for " offhand schuetzen/silhouette " . I was thinking of using it for " Prone & or Three Position Smallbore: 50yrd/100 yrd ". However , I don't want to modify it or do anything that might detract from its collectors value , its my only custom Rifle I own .. !

Does anyone have any info or history on this particular Rifle ?

L.M.

I dont have any info on the rifle. I can tell you, you can shoot it in all sorts of match's. Small bore three position. Schutzen, benchrest. I'm not sure about silhouette. There may be a weight limit.  Pick whatever match you want and have fun.  Wink

You might check with Rudi Prusok, ASSRA's archivist.  It seems to me he has some of the Eric Johnson shop records, and if not knows how to get to them.  Look on the ASSRA Homepage for information on contacting him.

You cannot use that buttplate in silhouette as I understand it.  But I bet you could find a way to unbolt the hook and install something like a wood block butt and be good to go.  Though perhaps you need a hammer too....

As nice looking a Martini as they get.

Hey Guys ,

Thanks for your inputs & comments .. ! I'm going to see how well it will group before removing the Metal Buttplates (Two Piece: Plate Dovetailed to fit Hook ; Freeland ?) and attaching a much thinner Buttplate that will accomodate my length of pull. The current set up is just a bit too long for me.

I'll send an e-mail to Mr. Prusok & share whatever info he might provide.

if you want help from Rudy you will need to pull the forearm - under it there should be a bbl # and a date stamped - with that info he should be able to supply you with the name of the person that the work was originally done for - my guess is that you will be surprised at how small of a group it will shoot - if some over the years has not screwed up the chamber or the bore.  Eric Johnson was a craftsman.
you all have a good day now - the rimfire - cdpersons

Hi,

I just removed the Forearm & triple checked the barrel under the forearm with a Magnify Glass, my eyesights not what it was ..  There were no indication of any date or any other markings on the Barrel.

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)
1. On top of Barrel between the Scope Mounts " --- ERIC JOHNSON --- " 2. On top of Barrel near Loading Block Chamber Area  "  --- FOR .22 L.R. ONLY --- "

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)
Unclear 5 digits on Forearm Stock : 18 (or A) 43A (8)

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)
" J / J  " on Metal Buttplate & Hook

No other markings except on the Action : " BSA "  On left Side Plate : " MADE IN ENGLAND " on top of the action.

I can't see enough of the butt hook to tell, but it may not be a Freeland, not that it matters. If it were not for the fact it is long it would be a simple fix to get a prone plate to replace the hook when necessary. But since its long simply replace the entire butt assy.
If you remove the hook alone (slide out of dovetail) it may be stamped on the face of one or both pieces as to brand.
Very nice rifle, Will work fine in 3-pos.

The base plate for the adjustable plate can be removed and threaded inserts for machine screws fitted to the stock.  You can then interchange buttplates using the same hole spacing without tearing up the wood.

One thing though - without that hook, that rifle will be quite nose-heavy, and have  a poor balance for offhand work, the buttpad slipping up on your shoulder.  consider adding a lead-filled steel tube in the drawbolt hole, to make it balance better...  Did the same thing to my standard 12/15, made a lot of difference for offhand work with the standard buttplate.  That hook is there for a reason.

If the stock is to long, take the buttplate hardware off. Tape the stock and cut it off on a bandsaw. Fit the buttplate back to the stock. There's not a thing in the world wrong with the buttplate  the way it is. Use the hook for offhand and take it off for benchrest or position shooting.
Anyone with a little skill can do that. Or your local gunsmith.   Wink

Hey everyone ,

I came to this forum looking for a little advice and possibly some Documentation regarding " Eric Johnson's " craftsmanship...!

We'll , I've been pleasantly surprise with the wealth of information this website has provided  Cool

" Louie M.:  I found your Johnson barrel in his shop notes; on the last page, after having started the search on the first, so it was one of the last barrels he made (September, 1951).

It was shipped on September 12 to Frank K. Eichter, 87-25 62nd Road, Rego Park, NY. (It's in Queens on the Long Island Expressway) Johnson lists the action (No. 0145) as being a BSA International, which is different than the 12/15, but it's the only Martini with that serial number listed among his notes.

Since many of Johnson's barrels also were ordered by Al Freeland for his International action, that hooked buttplare probably is a Freeland.

If you want, I can try to find some Freeland catalog pages that show his rifles and the buttplate and send them along to you.

I'll send you a copy of the  shop note listing.
Rudi Prusok, ASSRA Archives, ".

Thanks again Mr. Prusok .. !

Hey " Everyone " ,

I'm in total agreement , " It's Not An International Action " .. !

Just happy to find a tid bit of information from a reliable source , that I'm able to use as documentation... ! And who knows ? Someone might see this information & pipe in with a bit more , just to add to the intrigue.!

I'm not in it for any profit , simply " PRIDE " of ownership   Cool
and maybe a little history to share at my local Shooting Clubs " Junior Shooting Programs ".

Eric Johnson was a Swedish gentleman that made barrels. I knew him from shooting on the Winchester clubhouse ranges in New Haven Connecticut. He was great friends with Jack Lacy who shot for Winchesters' in national matches at Camp Perry.

Eric was quite old and gnarly when I saw him shoot in the late forties, early fifties. I believe he had a son in the business, but I'm not certain of that. He lived in Hamden Connecticut.

I know his work was greatly respected by all the shooters from Winchesters, many of whom bought his barrels for their personal use.

Unfortunately I could not afford one of his guns then, and haven't even seen one at gun shows I browse here in Virginia Beach.
