Tang sight for Uberti High Wall
Dec 31st, 2007 at 12:08am
Print Post

I am interested in putting a tang sight on my Uberti High wall, one that has windage adjustment and a precise vernier scale that would be suitable for serious competition, without having to have a custom base made up. I would like to avoid a Soule style if possible. Any recommendations would be appreciated. Also would need a Hadley but I assume a that would not be a problem. Thanks! Joe S.

Axtell offers a traditional style tang sight with windage.
If your spaghetti hiwall has the same hole spacing as the originals.

Thanks Westerner! Thats the first one I have seen that comes with the Winchester base and has windage.  I will double check the hole spacing, but I do have one question: The Winchester has the staff mounted on the forward end of the base, I am accustomed to the Sharps sight which is mounted farther back, is the difference in distance noticeable?  If I want to run a cleaning rod down the bore during a match will the staff have to be removed if mounted at the front of the base? Thanks! Joe

Joe_S,

I don't know whether it would fulfill all of your needs, but Lyman used to make a windage staff for their standard tang sight (part # 47, IIRC) and it is being made new and sold through Parts Unknown at a very reasonable price.  It looks a lot like the Pope tang sight and works about as well, but does not have the vernier feature for elevation and has somewhat less range of adjustment than the ones you are discussing.  I have used an original on my original high-wall .45-70 for some casual BPCS with satisfactory (for me) results.  JMHO, YMMV.

Happy New Year!

Joe,
your wiping rod will clear.  I dont know about the difference in eye relief.  I dont have much experience with the Sharps rifle.

Joe if the cleaning rod is close you can make up a flexable rod out of Delrin.  I use them for range rods were a simple wipe is all thats needed.  My Schuetzen's comb is too high to clear a straight rod.  At home I take the barrel off and clean it propery with a steel rod.

On my lower comb CPA a steel rod will clear but it's very close to the sight so use a Delrin for range wiping work too.

Delrin in various sizes is avalble from plastic suppliers. It drills and taps for 8/32 pretty good. Never had a jag pull out.

Joe,

Go to BACO (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

They have quite an array of tang sights.  The one I have on my Uberti is a Ukranian Mega Soule.  They have others.  Might find what you're looking for.

I'm still curious! Is the hole spacing, or mounting different for an Uberti Hi Wall vs. a Winchester?

The Uberti and the Winchester measure 2-3/16" for tang hole spacing.  Appear to be in the same location.

In that case, the guy who succeeded Cape Outfitters was, at last report, selling a pretty fair tang sight for original Winchesters that looked an awful lot like the one pictured above.  Anybody remember the name of that outfitter?   Huh

Froggie

Addendum:  I got it! go to < (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links); and under sights then rear sights look for item SIT1150, tang sight for high- and low-walls.

Hello Mr Johnny b Good!
That is pretty much what I am looking for, and as a matter of fact, that is probably what I will end up with. I have a nice MVA tang sight with windage and Hadley eyecup for my Sharps. I ordered a Winchester base for my Uberti, and when I recently tried to install it I discovered that the screws that came with it were too large, the sight staff was a very tight fit as was the thumbscrew.  Furthermore, the angle of the staff was not correct for the Highwall. Idecided to get another sight rather than try to get this one to fit.  However, today between football games I took another look at that base and with a little bit of carefoll polishing, I got the staff to fit, as well as the thumbscrew and discovered that the angle of the staff is adjustable , although I have not adjusted it yet I assume that wil not be a problem.  I happened to have a set of screws that will work, so at this point I believe that is the route I am going to go.  I considered a Winchester style tang sight but  I prefer the windage adjustment on the tang rather than front sight so this should work. Thanks to everyone  for all your help and suggestions! Joe S

Johnny b. Good, is that rifle of yers a spaghetti HW or a original?

In either case, it's a handsome rifle.  Wink
