You may recall back in about 1964 there was an article in the American Rifleman about a fellow who built a noise deadening device for the range, consisting of 55 gallon drums.  They claimed about 80% deadening of the blast.

My .458 could use some quieting.

The $200 tax is a transfer tax.  One-time.  But you have to get permission to take it across state lines first if you travel.  It's all in the BATF regulations easlily available on the net.

So, supposing that a guy wanted to buy a good suppressor for a .22 rimfire - all on the up and up.  Where does one start?  I suppose I could surf the web, but is there a couple of benchmark makers?

THE place to start would be on Tom Bower's (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) .  Look under NFA discussion: (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) .

Most of these folks are into the thrill and excitement of full auto and silenced/surpressed etc. and not into accuracy.  BUT they're good folks and you will have a dozen responses within a day of posting a question.

Brent I have a flyer from the shop that stocked them.  Some of the name brands are

Outback II for rimfires  Blackside for centerfires.  Both fitted up to adaptaors that were threaded onto the rifles barrel so they could be switched gun to gun.  They seems to be well made, finished anyway.  They also had Trinity Raptors Vipers Mossad's etc.

Nice aggressive names I guess it sells them.  The Outback looked just right for a rimfire rifle.  It was 325 dollars list price. I bet there is a lot of discounting.
