What Model Stevens is this?

A friend of mine inherited this from his late father and he's considering selling it.  He's like to know what it is and its approximate value.  I think it's a .22LR and the bore looked very good.  I'm not sure if the forend matches the buttstock.  The checkering just didn't look the same.

And since where looking at photos I'll toss out this training .22 he's also looking to move.  I can't say I remember if it's a repeater or a single shot.  I have no idea what it is or its worth:

Any insight would be appreciated.

The Stevens is a model 44.  It looks like it's in pretty good shape.   I don't think the checkering came with the rifle in other words added later.  I could be wrong, others make comment.  Worth?  what someone is willing to pay?  Probably in the $300 to $400 range.

The second one I don't have a clue.

Hanz;

That second rifle is almost the spitting image for a French model 1886 (er, 1880-something... 6, 8, somewhere in there) Lebel service rifle.

I suspect that it's a trainer from the 1880's through around WWI-ish.
Not a clue what it might be worth.

The Stevens 44, on the other hand, If you were putting it up for sale, and I saw it, and the price tag said "$450", I wouldn't hesitate but a moment reaching for my pocket...
(and if it does go up for sale, you could consider that an offer, if you like...).

Hope this helps.

I think it's quite possible the checkering on the buttstock is factory, but not so sure about the forearm. Not unusual for Stevens to just checker the buttstock, and someone may have checkered the forearm later. The forearm checkering doesn't look like a Stevens pattern, and it's a bit coarser too.

Thank you!

I knew someone here would know.  I've Emailed the owner a link to this thread.

Thank you for the lead on the trainer.

Many thanks and have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

On second thought I agree with your thoughts.  I completely ignored the tang sight which  would put it in the $400-500 catagory and maybe more in an auction.

I think the checkering on the Stevens is original.    Smiley

Is there a model number stamped on the front of the receiver under the foreend? The checkering on the Buttstock does look factory, but on the foreend-not so much.

I don't know.  My friend has the rifle and I think he's away hunting.  I didn't pull anything apart on it looking for clues.  I pretty much cracked open the blue book and realized I didn't know what model it was so I snapped some quick photos.  Next time I'll know where to start looking.  Thanks  Smiley

Quarter Bore, I have a original Stevens #52 with the same type checkering and pattern on the forestock. That's why I think it's original. The buttstock checkering I've seen in old book's.

Does seem strange, they don't match.  Undecided

I think that this is a Favorite not a 44 One thing is the s/n W99 I have not seen a 44 with a prefix.2 the takedown is not right for 44 to big it looks like the screw on a few of the 55's I have seen.as to price it is worth what some one is willing to pay but 4-500 is low in my book for is gun. That is a nice looking Stevens, I'd happily pay $800 for that
rifle as is.
Happy Thanksgiving to All Smiley

I also think it's a 44

I think kenmachine is correct! After noting that oversized barrel screw in the receiver, I'd agree this is not a 44 action, but a Favorite action. Looks like the barrel may have been refinished also, as the edges of the octagon flats are rounded from buffing.

That's a pretty flashy looker, for a Favorite.

I can admit to not getting out much, but all the Favorites I have seen were rather a lot more utilitarian than the rifle above, which is rather easy on the eyes.

Of course, in my price range, they tend to come with stock of the chunk-O'-2x10 variety, too.

Nice lookinn gun, original or not.

I'm gonna tuck those pictures away into one of my "someday" files.

Cheers

Well I'll agree it's not a standard Favorite, but that doesn't mean it's not a modified or special order Favorite.
