Help with a Pope Question

A lot of years ago I read that The Grand Master,Harry Pope was at a match and straightened a barrel with the crotch of a tree. I have looked for this referance recently and can't find it.. Have I gotten old timers syndrome??? Or can someone steer me in the right direction.
Thanks

Not unless the barrel was about 12 feet long. Shocked

The way I remember it Dr. Mann, and Neidner were out woodchuck hunting and that is when the barrel was bent to "sight in" a rifle. I thought it was in the Yours truly, Harvey Donaldson book, but I could not find it. So ???

It's not in Donaldsons book.  Sounds like a Ned Roberts tale to me.

Barrel bending was then, and remains a common practice.  I don't think it something that Harry Pope did because he was a bug about boring straight concentric bores in the first place.  One mention of this in "The Story of Pope's Barrels" states one evaluation done on a sample of his barrels quite some time after it was made.  It put center of bore .004" out of alignment from dead center at the muzzle...as I recall.  Furthermore, he was opposed to bending barrels in the first place as it induces stress that will come to the fore as the barrel heats.

I've seen articles in gun rags within the last 5 years on the subject, most recently about revolvers.
Without speaking to effects on quality, the bending of rifle barrels by the manufacturer is as common as rain.

I'm not saying I want to do it mind you, but it's one way to adjust fire with fixed sights.

I'll put odds on one of the fabulous Parkenfarker family smith's.
It's the only logical answer.
