A 63, 74, 75, 77 or 78?

The consensus on that order of models would probably be
Shiloh, Shiloh, C. Sharps, Axtell, Pipedream Productions.

Mine, too, but they make only a '77.

It's more about what you are looking for.  My top 3 would be Richard Mckinney's Freund Sharps, then Axtels 77 Sharps and finally  Shilo's Sharps. Let me be clear all are good it depends on what you are looking for.
I recieved the ASSRA raffle rifle from Richard McKinney last Thursday. Richard had built this up as a Freund modified Sharps. The action has been reprofiled as Freund did and has the rocking breech block and double extractors that were a Freund hallmark. Fit and finish were great and the action opens and closes like a bank vault.
Next I would choose Axtels 77 model Sharps of all the stock configreations the 77 is the most streamlined and pleasing to the eye.
Lastly The Shilo 74. The 74 action has always seemed kind of big and clunky to me. But there is no question that Shilo makes a quality product.

I am no expert  on Sharps but the Axtel made me want one real bad.  It was on display at a big gun collectors show near a collection of original Sharps creedmores and did not suffer at all in comparison

Of course if you want a Sharps Borchardt (the pick of the litter, IMHO  Cool) then you will want to contact Al Storey.  Look at the one that was an ASSRA prize a couple of years ago! It'll knock your eyes out!  Shocked

If long range target shooting to the old NRA 19th century rules is what you are looking for the Axtell I saw cannot be beat.  Problem is no one shoots to those rules today or so I am told. It's probably 2 lbs too light for either BPC Silhouette or the New Long Range rules which allow a heavy rifle. It's by far the most attractive Sharps. That big and powerful and almost graceful in build.

They may make a heavy barrel version but even if so might as well buy one of the others if you have to have clunky

Boats, they make their rifles in many configurations from the honest 10# version to heavier versions.  I have one of the latter.

Do you consider this "clunky"?

Is this Richard McKinney a live and well living person. How come you don't talk about how well this rifle shoots?

The above comments seem to be related to personal preferences in aesthitics and style. When it comes to the 1874 model, I don't believe there exists a better reproduction than Shiloh. The very plain No. 3 Sporting Shiloh I have compares in fit and finish with VERY high grade British guns from the last two centuries. Should one need factory service or support, Shiloh is second to none.

Yes Richard Mckinney is a living person and his Schuetzen Gun Company can be contacted by using his phone or address in his ad in the Journal.
Secondally I did not comment on how the rifle shoots as I have not shot it. As I stated it is the 2008 Raffle Rifle. I feel that It would be wrong to take it out and shoot it while it is in my care.
Having said that the rifle is extreamly well made, has a Badger barrel, and Freund style sights. If Richard's chambering work is as good as the rest of the work he has done on this rifle it should shoot. Depending  on who wins this beauty.

I think we need to take a vote, what do you folks say?
