Nice High Wall there JD...  My dad and I got the same ones, both in .38-55 and consecutive #'s to boot!  Just to bad he's not shooting much these days...

One question I HAVE TO ASK -- where did you get that drop-dead-gorgeous Winchester single shot rifle BOX to go along with your rifle??? I gotta get me one of those!!

I sent ya a pm about the box.  It's pretty nice.  I was inspired to buy it after I got the rifle.

I might try out some of your smokeless loads.  So far I've just been using black powder (Swiss 3F) and I'm pretty happy with it.  I have to say, I'm real pleased with the rifle.  It's accurate, balance is great, fit and finish all first rate.

Good luck getting a box.  I hope you and your dad get a lot of opportunities to shoot those rifles together.  try some black powder sometime--it's a hoot!

JD

JD_Y  Don't be so secretive!  I'd love to find out about that gorgeous box, too.  If they are available, one would look really nice under MY Christms tree!  Cheesy  Also, I have just gotten my long-time pistol-shooting buddy to try schuetzen, and of course he had to get a 'wall (a new .32-40) and he'll need something to start accumulating his pile of gadgets and gizmos that will go with it to the range.  C'mon, be a friend and let me know where I can get one (or two, or... Roll Eyes )

Thanks,
Froggie

At this point my daughter would say, "Oh Mah God, now everyone will have one!"    Roll Eyes

Okay, I'll spill the beans.  I got it on ebay!  This seller lists a lot of Winchester stuff. At Winchester prices, if you know what I mean.   My advice is to wait until he has one on auction. His ebay store prices are pretty mean.  I got my box a lot cheaper by buying it in his auction.

His store:   (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

How's the .38-40 shoot?  That's an interesting caliber. A friend of mine shoots cowboy action in .38-40 with black powder.  Pistols and rifle.  I was going to switch to it, but reloading supplies, bullets, brass, etc. are a little hard to find (not much variety) and expensive so I ended up going .44-40.
Wonder where I could get a high wall in .44-40.....

Good luck with the box!
JD

--EDIT-- oops, I got your caliber wrong.  I've only had one cup'a coffee....need some more to think straight.

Thanks for the info JD!

As my daughter would say, following-up on what your daughter said..  "Gee, now the price is going UP!!!"  Embarrassed

Sure will be fun to watch all the forum members bidding if/when one does come up for auction!!!  Wink

Tight groups!

Old #7, I routinely use SR4759 in both 45-90 and 38-55 and it NEVER burns as clean as your picture shows. What primer and load are you using?

Happy Thanksgiving, folks!  Smiley

As long as the subject's on smokeless, I'd like to try some of that new-fangled stuff.  I'm curious to know about 4579, too (or alternatives).

Also, has anyone used duplex loads in .38-55?

WRDSMTH, if it's not burning dirty, you probably aren't doing it right!  Cheesy  It's kinda like shooting Bullseye pistol powder, there is almost always going to be at least some leftover residue in the bbl, but be sure it doesn't build up to get "ironed into" the bore.  My original high-wall and Douglas and Green Mtn .32-40 bbls ALL have a goodly amount of residue after as few as 5-10 shots when I shoot 4759.  I don't let it bother me.
