I think I posted this here long ago but can't find it and lost the address.....there was a fellow making a device to "scrape" the bases of lead bullets flat...Anyone got his address? I'm not sure he is even still making them but I'd like to find out. Thanks.

Here's the deal. If you end up with bullets that have bumps or lumps on the bases-if the bases aren't completely flat, then
First, make sure the mold top and sprue plate bottom are flat, and then
as you cast,
open the sprue plate and get rid of the sprue
close the sprue plate enough so that there's sprue plate over the bullet base, not hole
whack the sprue plate with a plastic mallet, and
your bullet bases will be perfectly flat.
Some will now write in and tell you that you'll ruin the mold, bend the sprue plate, "spring" the mold, your grass won't grow, you'll feel old and your dog will hate you. ALL BS, I've been doing it for years, my bullets have flat bases, nothing bad has happened. Whack that sprue plate and the still hot alloy will flatten out nicely.
For more see the book at
(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)
FILES, then 3.4 HOW TO CAST BULLETS, look under "Flat Bases" for a description and pictures of the whacking. Same chapter, HOW TO ADJUST AND MAINTAIN BULLET MOLDS for keeping that sprue plate bottom and mold top flat.
Good luck and keep us informed.

OF COURSE some of us will write in  Cheesy

BS?  We're ASSUMING that you know how to measure or detect flatnes;  Wink

aren't color blind mistaking brown for green;  Shocked

and the you know the difference between your dog biting and licking you.   Roll Eyes

Now the real question:  Do they shoot any more accurately?  (The generic question: is it significant?)

I have a handfull of extra sprue plates, it's worth a try.

Another way to get perfectly flat bases is to cast with a very loose sprue plate so that you get raised bases on your bullets. Then after cutting the sprue off come back and shear off the raised portion of the base with the edge of your sprue plate (which is sharpened slightly at 90 degrees). This will require lifting the side of the sprue plate so that the sharpened edge can be drawn flat across the top surface of the mold. I have cast over 10,000 bullets with a mold this way without damaging it.

It must cast really good bulllets since it helped me shoot a 1245/1250-45x/50

If I was going to experement I would just cut them off in a lathe.  You could do it in a drill press too.  Turning and triming would probably be more accurate than scraping

You could probably do it with a case trimmer like the wilson.  Just make a cradle for the bullet, set the stop for the bullet length. and turn the cutter handle.

Hello shooter93,

In the August 2002 issue of "The Single Shot Exchange", there was an advertisement for the Precision Bullet Edger.  The website address doesn't seem to work, and I didn't try the e-mail address, which was  lelaporta@usadatanet.net. I believe the maker was named Leonard La Porta.  I don't know if the product is still being made - I just saw the ad in the back issue mentioned.

Take care,

Steve Bryson
