Has any one had experience with a Springfield rolling block? I just bought one and am not sure if I should try to restore it or convert it
It is in the original 50/70 U S but the last 6 inches of the barrel are extremely pitted.  What do you all think ? Ream the bad part of the barrel or try to find a new 3 groove blank and start from there?
Thank you for any help that might be offered.

i am at this moment restoring a NYS 50-70 Rolling block, i believe it is very silimar(if not the same, except made by Remington). Have you tried wiping the barrel with Naval Jelly, leave it for 20 minutes and wip out with wet patches, it will etch the barrel a little but you will be amazed how much crap & rust it will get out of the barrel .Mine was the same, last 6" looked like it needed cuting-off, however after Naval Jelly it was much improved, it think it will shoot OK, only time will tell. Mine was bought off of E-bay for a very small sum, believe it or not. I did have to shorten the barrel and re-0chamber at the breech end because of severe rusting in the breech, but i only lost 1-1/2". I like my barrels long if possible, i will not cut one unless i have to, the chamber was too pitted to use.

My guess based on not so recent gun show observations is the rifle is worth twice as much even in the conditon you outline as the Action itself.  Put it another way you could probably sell the rifle for about the price of a good modern made Single Shot action. If you go for one of the Italian imports perhaps the entire rifle

If shooting competion is your plan you are probably a lot better off with a reproduction.  Only way I can see thats worthwhile making a nice rifle out of an old RB is if the action is already seperate from the Rifle and you enjoy doing the gunsmith work yourself.

Having said that it's a lot of fun to get an old war horse shooting again. You should alter it as little as possable. Lots of barrels that look very bad shoot pretty well. Accucary with one of the milatary 50/70's is not so good anyway say 3 to 4 moa and they will do it with less than perfect bores.

That's my opinon anyway
