Does anyone make a Unertl style adjusting rear mount that could be used for a tube sight? Thanks. JerryW

Unertle used to make a Tube sight. I had one, it appeared to be using the same mounts as the scopes. The real difficulty with Tube sights is front to rear alignment. You have to chase down the right combination of blocks to get it to zero with a reasonable sight picture thru the sights. My first effort horrified me. When I got the rifle zeroed at 200 yds the front aperature was cockeyed way off center up and down and left to right. The best arrangement I have seen is a freind that shoots at my club, he uses a full length tube sight with the front and rear aperature's inside the same tube. It is full length as the old style scopes were. Rear mount and front mount at the muzzle. How about it Pres? Want to weigh in here? HTH. Regards, FITZ Smiley

Many of the Freeland tube sights for small bore actually used a Unertl adjustable rear ring. I'm with Fitz. I have a tube sight (Andrew Tucker from the UK) for a BSA Mk III International Match Rifle. From 50yds to 100yds the set up is reasonable (sight picture is round and centered front and rear). From 100 yds to 200yds, the sight picture is so mis-shaped as to make it difficult to use. I may have to get Steve Earle to make a stepped front base to make it work properly.

I have a tube sight we(Clayton) made from a 3' piece of brass plumbing tube, 1" Unertl mounts, and a Lyman 17A. The front sight is in the tube, turned to fit the ID radius, and backward to allow changing apertures. The rear is a piece of brass turned to fit the tube ID, drilled tapped for an aperture. At the Florida Schuetzen match in April 05? I met 2 guys with essentially the same sight.
Mine has a lot of light/glare inside, theirs had springs found and pulled longer and put inside the tube to fix the glare.
There's nothing tricky about making these, finding the mounts is the real trick.
I'll take some pictures later.

The sight is 30" long.
Here's the front, we turned the base of the 17A to fit the tube ID

Here's the rear. We turned a piece of brass to fit the tube ID, drilled sideways for the set screw and drilled/tapped  center to fit apertures. That's a Merit disk in it.

And here's the amazing trick rig. That's a Ruger ring with a piece of steel filed to be held by the ring. The steel has a "V" filed in it to center the tube on the front Unertl mount barrel. Careful filing keeps this from damaging the Unertl mount.
This tube sight works just fine so far up to 200 yards bench or offhand.

HI all, newbie here bringing up an old topic.  I'm interested in making one of these sights and have a question.  Does the tube slide in the mounts from recoil, or is it held rigid like a scope mount?

Why are they made like that?  Why not stationary?  Seems counter productive, at least for repetitious shots.

joeb -
nice sight, good photos, thanks.

hr, I suspect the slide is to prevent the dreaded half-moon effect on one's eyebrow, plus it makes loading, esp breech seating, and cleaning a whole lot easier.
