Back in the day the opinion was that .25-21 was the most accurate .25 caliber cartridge. I don't suppose anything has changed since then.

Some of my friends have had good luck with 25 Hornet, others prefer 25-20 single shot and still others like the 25-20 WCF. Some of the best shooting 25s I've seen use a 1 in 10" twist, although both Ron Smith and Barry Darr both recommend a 1 in 12" twist, Borton & Darr make an excellent 25 spitzer mold, so you might ask them. Hmmm?

a bullet weight of 102 grains with a fairly small metplat has been giving the best accuracy in 12 inch twist barrels for us smokeless powder shooters.

I shot a 14" twist (or was it 15") highwall in .25-20 SS.  I found that it could not use a heavier(longer) bullet than about 85 gr w/o tipping.

For my money, a .25-20 should be shooting 90-120 gr bullets to be competitive out to 200 yds.   And you really can't get that to work with bp due to too little case capacity.

Now, having said that, I am sure others will differ, but that's just my experience.

One of these days I'll find a large shank low wall action and put that barrel back on.

Come to think of it when they intended to shoot the 100 grain bullet in .25's they genearaly thought of the .25-25, but with the way that modern blackpowder shooters seem to like lots of bullet weight per powder charge maybe the .25-21 would work best with the 100 grain bullet after all. I guess if you got a rifle chambered to .25-21 and it was not enough powder you could always rechamber to the .25-25. At some point I would think that powder fouling would get unexceptable with a big charge of powder in such a small caliber.

FWIW, Ned Roberts wrote that he considered the .25-21 to be superior to either the .25-25 or the .25-20 SS.

anybody ever try the 25-35 w/ BP?  or is the bottleneck case just too much hassle with BP?
