greetings and salutations to one and all,

need some help...  had a copy of cartridges of the world, but loaned it to someone, can't remember who.. they must not remember browing it, cause it never came back.. i lose a lot of books that way..

anyhow, was digging thru the garage and found a take down lo wall in 22 wcf. if memory serves correctly when purchased, it was represented to be a hornet.

have heard a wcf and a hornet are the same thing.. my question is,, are they???

Granpa.

I have my Ctgs of the world right here.  They say the Hornet was based on the Black powder .22 WCF.  Problem is they publish the dims of the Hornet but not the earlier cartridge. From the pictures they look alike.

Anyone know for sure ?

No.  But they are real close.  The .22 WCF was a black powder cartridge originally manufactured for the Winchester 1885 single shot.  Black powder load at first but was made with smokeless to black powder ballistics. Discontinued in 1936.  Used a .228 bullet of 45 gr.  Case was used for the development of the Hornet using smaller diameter bullets and smokeless powder.  This is a real short course, but they are not the same cartridge.

I believe the WCF rim thickness is .045 compared to the Hornet's .062 thick rim. I remember reading somewhere that the Hornets rim was thickened to prevent the then hotter smokeless load from being chambered and fired in BP WCF guns.

The only difference I'd heard about was the change in neck diameter to accomodate .223" or .224" bullets from the original .228".

The neck on the WRA Co. .22WCF sample cartridge I have is .243"; that of a Win. Super Speed  .22 Hornet is .241".  Rim thickness for the WCF is .065", that of the Hornet is .062".  Length 1.404" and 1.411" for the shell, although the Hornet round is cannelured, which would tend to shorten the shell.
