Dell "screw gun"

Just received the May-June Journal and noticed the picture on page 7, I have used this type of pump rotor for years and always thought you should be able to make something useful out of them, it is such a neat piece of machining. Is there some way we could get some more pictures and some information on how he did it, and does it shoot?

amen and TTT

There is quite a story to that gun. I've heard bit'sn pieces over the years.  I very seriously hope that we can borrow it from whoever inheirated it in order to get some high quality pictures and the complete story for a future issue of the J.

You list'n Leadball?

The screw gun is a Hoch action with some sort of a mixing paddle for a barrel. Charlie sent the apparatus to a man in   Michigan to have it drilled and a liner installed, as I remember the guy wanted more money for the job that he originally quoted because the "barrel " was so hard, Charlie did not give him more money.
The Screw Gun was finished for Charlie's Memorial match and quite a few shooters gave it a try. which means that we still don't know if it will shoot. John Pappas  Roanoke, Va has the rifle --he has said it will make a trip to Etna Green---the green one and several others can give more info on the famous Screw Gun.   leadball

Actually, John Pappas lives somewhere over nearer Charlottesville, I believe; and yes that "barrel blank" started life as a rotor that John and Charlie were looking at and said that would make an interesting looking barrel.  The whole project was done by them to build a one-of-a-kind rifle for John, to whom it belongs (since it was his rotor and Charlie did the work for and with him.)

As leadball stated, the original piece of steel was bored and lined (I never knew when, how, or by whom) to .321 or so and chambered by Charlie for his .32-.357 (don't dare call it a ".32 Dell" or he'll GETCHA!!)  This may be the last rifle Charlie worked on and is almost assuredly the last he chambered himself.

The fore end was made in typical benchrest shape then hogged out to the major diameter of the rotor and "glass bedded" into place.  Getting a pair of scope mounts onto the "moving target" of the rotor was its own challenge, I seem to recall.  the butt stock of course was the only simple aspect of the whole project.

That's most of what I remember about the building of the screw gun except that many discussions were held and much laughter ensued over what the general reaction woud be at its unveiling.  Like leadball, I hope it makes it to E-G sometime as charlie would have liked to see the reaction there!  Maybe singleshot or Stevens52 will be able to add more to the saga.

OK- here is what I have on it- Charlie had John Pappas send it out to be gundrilled- he put the liner in AFAIK. I brought it down here and set it up and surface ground three spots on the top to attach the scope rail, and 2 on the bottom for foreend attachment. The outsaide is hard chromed and is HARD, but the core drilled and tapped fine. Here are some pics:
