Wollensak Optical Co.

Morning All,

Anyone have any info on the Wallensak scopes, I believe they were a less expensive version of the Lyman 438's. I have my eye on one for a stevens favorite. Wink Do they use the same mounting blocks as the 438?

Thanks.

Moshannon, just to get the ball rolling, I will tell you that I have VERY limited experience (read: "one specimen") with the Wollensak.  Mine was about like a Lyman 438 but used the larger size base blocks like some of the old Winchesters, etc.  Also, it lacked the so-called Pope rib or any other means of keeping it upright...it could turn freely in the externally adjusting rings.  It is now in the curiosity collection of a friend of mine as I couldn't figure out a way to use it effectively.  I would not be surprised to hear that it should have been in a set of mounts that were fixed rather than sliding and had adjustment like the Lyman 22JR, but this is the way I received it.   Undecided

Hopefully, somebody else will chime in with a lot of definitive info for all of us!  Wink

Frog,
I think MVA will sell you a bolt-on rib for that scope if you want.  I could be wrong but I have seen one somewhere.

i HAVE HAD SOME OF THEASE SCOPES THAT THE MOUNTS FIT STANDARD 3/8IN BASES. SOME HAD CLICK JOBYDOOS AND ONE HAD A JAM NUT. THE LOCK ON MOUNTS DID HAVE A POINTED SCREW THAT WENT INTO A SMALL HOLE ON THE BASE.  THE OPTICS IN ALL WERE CLEAR THE STADIA LINES WERE NOT IN ONE SCOPE.THEY DON'T GATHER MUCH LIGHT.

The one I have has two guide ribs on the collar which has the battery stop on it. The collar can be moved fore and aft to position the scope then a screw tightened to clamp it in place. The mounting blocks used are Winchester type with a hole for a pin on the end of the locking screw.

I have several Wollensak scopes, and all use std. 3/8" bases. Some have the added rib at the front mount to keep them upright, while others clamp the scope in the front mount to keep it upright, but also stop it from moving under recoil.
There were several makers who built scopes similar to the Wollensaks, and often every similar scope is called a Wollenak, even if it isn't. Early Marlin #1 and #2 scopes looked just like a Wollensak, and if they aren't in their original box, it's tough to tell without comparing the mounts side by side.
The Ranger scopes may have been made by Wollensak also, as they lok very close also, except for the name Ranger on the tube.

Thanks for the info guys. I think I am leaning toward an Unertl 1 1/4" target instead. I know it isn't quite the correct time period for the model rifle I'm putting it on, but it will surve my purpose better in the long run.

I'm sure the posts will help someone else in the future. I couldn't find any info for them before this.

I have a set of binos made by that Co that were my fathers.  8X and seem very clear, but not fog proof.  They need a prism reglued.  I have been looking for a company that does that work.

What was the quality level?  I think these were made in the 30's or 40's.

Yes Gussy, they were in the 30's and 40's. Quality for the time was good, but not on par with Lymans or upper end scopes.
