Stevens 55 Lady's model (revisited)

I am restoring this rifle and have gotten much help from reading all of the entries on this forum. Marlinguy answered several questions for me already on this model.

New question, there is a spring and screw located inside the front of the receiver. It appear to aid in holding the breech block in the closed position. I haven't seen this on other favorite models. Is this an oddity or specific to this model? I am also going to need to replace it. It had a crack when I got it and has since broken. I know it isn't a part produced by Wisners, and like I said, I don't think I am going to have an easy time finding a replacement from another parts gun. I guess I'll have to have one made or live without it.

Mike:

I suspect that the spring is there to keep the lever from drooping. That was a perenial problem with the 44 and from what I have read a spring was one of the fixes that Stevens tried.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Glenn is absolutely right! You can adjust that screw so the lever snaps up sharply, and holds great.

It was one of the "fixes" for the drooping lever.  I had a Model 44 in 38-55 with the same devise.  Apparently Stevens only made them for a short while then dropped it completely.  Pity. A new one will have to be made if you can't do without one.

I had the same problem of a broken lever spring on a H&A 922.It sounds as if it may be the same design.  (de Hass pg. 209)
I had pretty good luck cutting a new one out of an old putty knife blade and then bending it to the contour of the original. I used a burr on a dremel to cut the hole.  Hope this helps.
