Old Dog-New Trick!

Is it possible to use a schuetzen rifle to take game with? You betcha! Here's a picture of the mule deer I harvested Saturday morning with my Ballard #9 Union Hill, in .38-55, using a cast 245 gr. bullet, with 3031 powder at about 1300 fps.
This fella tipped the scales near 200 lbs. on the hoof, and is a 5x4 rack. it's sure satisfying to bring home the venison with a 125 year old Ballard! Wink

It is possible to go the other way too.  I shoot schuetzen with hunting rifles all the time.

Nice buck.  With luck, I'll take one in a month and a half.

Paul, coyotes have to eat too you know.  Not to mention bears, wolves, ravens etc.  Two years back I found a bald eagle posted on an antelope that I shot at dusk the day before.  He did a nice job of guarding it for me...

I'm pretty much a neatnic but I leave gut piles for the rest of the food chain.  Hard enough backpacking a boned out elk on one's back as it is.

Leaving 'em outside is fine..
Just don't do what a friend of mind did, and drag the deer home, hang it in the garage, and gut it there....  Took him days to get it all off his garage floor, and where'd he put it all? In the trash... which didn't go out for a week.

Of course, my friend is an idiot...
I give most folks here the benefit of the doubt that they're brighter than he is :-D

Thanks fellas! And Brent is right! The coyotes need to eat too! We saw a lot of yotes all through the hunt, but the funniest sight I saw was Sat. afternoon when we spooked a small herd of about 14 deer out of a draw. They headed towards the top only to surprise two coyotes that were watching the herd. The coyotes thought the deer were chasing them, and they started running, but the deer caught up, and the coyotes looked pretty startled, like they weren't sure what to do when the game turned on them! Grin
They finally did a 90 degree turn and split off from the herd.

Swamp Fox, your humor is just a bit too deep for my slow and simple brain.  No apology needed.

Congratulations, MarlinGuy. That is sure "Putting the HUNT back in the hunt".

All of my deer have been taken with handguns for pretty much the same reasons. To "Put the HUNT back in the hunt!". It is infinitely more satisfying, isn't it?

Sure is Dale! I've taken deer with some of my old Marlins before, and it was always fun, but this being one of my best mulies, and this Ballard schuetzen rifle, made it such a joy I still can't stop smiling!

And Ben, no apology needed! I took no offense from your post!
