Based on my experience with the things, they are no panacea. They ADD difficulties.

Well not to throw "stuff" in the fan nor to dispute Mr. H&K but how would a plastic sabot be different from a gas check? With the typical gas check the base of the bullet is exposed the fire and other happenings inside the barrel. With a plastic sabot the base of the bullet as well as the rest of the bullet is protected to some degree from the same conditions. If the base of the bullet was exposed in both cases, I would not dissagre. Therefor the discussion as to there is no difference between sabotted bullets and plain base bullets may continue. My call would be that plastic sabots and gas checks are in the same box for our shooting. "Not allowed"???  Wink

The rules specifically forbid METALLIC gas checks.  Since the use of wax and other non-metallic wads and wads that act to some degree as gas checks has a long history in the schuetzen community going back to Leupold's wads, I would have to add my agreement to the call made by Mr Borton.  The precedent is already there.  That's just my $.02, so you can take it or leave it, of course!   Roll Eyes

Froggie

PS  Ask Dale53 how well LDP wads work in his smokeless rifle...you may abandon the whole idea of sabots or any other plastic wad or device!   Undecided  GF

CoolWell far be it from me to disagree with Mr. H&K or the green frog for that matter, I do know that plastic wads in black powder cartridges do make a real mess to clean out of the barrel.  I also agree that the plastic sabots are more trouble than they are worth.  Thanks Mr. H&K for your definative statement.  Kiss Still, an interesting question.  Smiley

Plastic gas checks, Lino, long pointy bullets. ultra high velocity, small caliber.  Mechanical backers.  Hmmmm.  When is Ben gonna be on the board?   Joe.

My experience is that to shoot the best groups with sabots in a ML, the plastic fouling must be aggressively aorked on between shots. And that is with the high pressure/high temp sabots in a very slick barrel. My gut says let em use the things. they won't be a threat.
