Does anyone know if Winchester records at Cody show work done at Winchester on non-Winchester guns? Spcifically looking for info on a Ballard that might have been rebarreled by Winchester?
Thanks,

Worth a phone call. They have been very accomodating in looking up records for me in the past. One thing I can say by observation. All the Ballards I have seen that were rebarreled by Winchester had a roll stamping on the barrel that went something like this.  " Specialy Barreled by Winchester Repeating Arms Co." with the Hartford address. The issue was one of letting the public know that someone thought enough of Winchester Barrels to request one be installed on their favorite Rifle. HTH Regards, FITZ

Thanks Fitz! Talked with Cody, and they say there are no records of non-Winchester repairs. Looks like I'll take it at face value, and not worry either way. Appreciate your help!

Mystery solved, but still don't know about Winnie records?
Received the Ballard #9 Union Hill, with Winchester barrel, and on the 5 o'clock flat, under the forearm is the rollstamp, "Re-Barreled Winchester Repeating Arms Co."

Marlinguy, the Winchester records at Cody are not manufacturing or special order records. They are from the Shipping and Recieving warehouse. The Supervisor at the time made it his personal policy to keep a record of everything shipped or recieved. Did not matter if it was repair, change, or another make of Rifle sent to Winchester for whatever purpose. There was no laws in this country at the time requiring Firearms Manufacturer's to keep records. When this Supervisor retired he asked Winchester management what they wanted him to do with the records. They did not even know they existed. So they just stored them and when Winchester started its downsizing they were donated to Cody. The Stamping you found underneath is rare. I have seen Ballards with a stamp on the top that
indicates " Specialy Barreled By Winchester Repeating Arms Co. " with the Hartford address. This was a game of one upsmanship done by the larger factorys of the time. I would not worry about it just relax and enjoy it. You actually have something special as these kinds of deals were usually assigned to the best craftsmen in the specail order shop.
HTH Regards, FITZ.

Great info Fitz! Yes I'm tickled with it, and hope to have many years of shooting with it.
As for Win. workers; this gun's barrel also carries the intials of JP Parker (JPP) so I'm sure it was properly installed.
Thanks for the neat information!
