When Charlie Dell was alive and making his lube pumps, he made all of his inserts with the same small size pilot hole, which was just big enough for the head of his ejector rod to pass through.  Then, regardless of the size of the bullet chamber itself, the rod worked with whatever insert was installed in the pump.  Once, as a training exercise, he gave me a long length of aluminum rod and put me to work on the lathe in his shop making blank inserts, and the first step was to bore that pilot hole, so I am pretty confident of what I'm saying here!  Wink

Was Brushy Mountain Charlie Dell's " home range "?

And if so, was he then the schuetzenmeister for the matches before you ?

I just enjoy knowing the history of things around me, don't you know !

No, Charlie had a farm property near Blacksburg, VA.  There was a range with about 4 positions (if everyone was friendly with everyone) that went out to 200 yds.  That was the "real" Chinquapin range, but was lost to us with his passing.  The opportunity to continue in the tradition Charlie started here in VA came with the building of the range at the Brushy Mtn Club, and we have been there for the last 3 years, with the shoot in 4 weeks making the 4th June match at this venue.  See ya there!

Would it be possible to get a picture or a little more information on the piston that would fit in the bore of the pump.  Is it also sealed with "O" rings ?  What is the dia. and pitch of the threaded pressure shaft ?  Is there some kind of bearing surface on the part of the piston where the shaft puts pressure on it ?  Would it be hardened--- have several hardened washers on it ?
Sorry for all the questions but have wanted to make one for some time and would rather get it right the first time.
Thanks
Reg

The piston on mine, that was made by "Singleshot", was made of ,I think, grey PVC. it developed a crack so I made one from nylon. It is shaped like a cup in a wheel cylinder except beefier. I don't recall if there was a back-up washer but that would certainly be a good idea. The screw is made from 1/2 inch material with about 20 TPI. It threads through a piece of brass.

Charlie and I made/make the pistons out of PVC, delrin or nylon is also suitable. Charlie ground spacer washers to fit between the piston and the (1/2-20) screw as an adjusment for minimal end play, I have been using a 5/16 id o-ring as it seems to have less leakage that way. I have eperimented with o-rings used as a gland also, and that will also work, but the o-rings tend to blow out as there is pretty extreme pressure in the system, believe it or not.
I try to keep the fit between the ejector rod and the head at no more than .002" clearance, as it can quickly get very sloppy as Webb conjectured.

     Willis ---

Is that .001" on each side for a total of .002" larger diameter hole over rod ?

Webb- .001/.002" larger hole than rod diameter. I drill them at .156" (5/32") and shoot for a .155" rod diameter. Also the right size to thread 10-32 for the "top hat" cap.

My version of Charlie Dell's lube pump made from brass plumbing pipe.  Leather was used for the piston.

A big thank you to Willis (Singleshot) for all the help.  It seems to work very well (no leaks).

If anyone is considering something similar, be aware that plumbing pipe is neither straight, round, nor concentric, so expect issues.

These portable hand pumps are great to have.  I've even seen one similar to Chuck's made entirely out of PVC pipe/fittings/valves obtainable from the plumbing department of the Lowe's or Home Depot stores.

If, however, you prefer the historically correct version, I would have to agree that the nicest and most accurate to the original rendition is the one put out by Single Shot (Willis Gregory) in South Carolina, and may be purchased with the original formula Charlie Dell lube, if so desired.

The gentleman who owns Pope's NJ machinery lives about 10 miles from me. I will see if I can borrow a Pope lubricator from him to photograph.

   Joel,

Would I be correct in assuming that you personally know the gentleman to which you refer ?  What a resource you apparently have at your disposal.  Would you feel comfortable informing the gentleman about the A.S.S.R.A. and inviting him to participate with us at this forum to the extent that he would care to do so ?

I would understand that he may value his privacy in these matters, but on the other hand he well may welcome the opportunity to share whatever Harry M. Pope memorabilia he is in ownership of.

At a minimum, I look forward to whatever photos you are able to acquire and share with us.

      Thanking you in advance,

Joel,
I would second what Creed said. Photos would be most interesting.

I just spoke to him and I will be able to borrow an original Pope lubricator. If you can wait a week when I get back from KC, I'll be able to take some pictures of it. He told me he is aware of this site, but prefers to "lurk", just as I did until recently.
