Unfortunately, the correct cleaning rod for the Sharps-Borchardt model 1878 musket is a very rare item.  There are plenty of these rifles without the correct rod, but I have never, ever, seen a spare rod without its rifle.  The rod is unique to this gun, and has a sort of tulip shaped head with knurled ring at the top, and a round hole.  You often find these rifles with a replacement rod from a rolling-block or a Springfield.
But, don't give up hope.  A lot of guys are buying the military muskets and using the actions to make target guns.  If you run into someone doing this, hopefully they'll save the original rod.

This may have been covered elsewhere in the forum long since, but I’m rather new here.  S&S Firearms of Glendale, NY, has Sharps Borchardt military rifle ramrods in stock as of this writing (23 August 2026).  The price is minimal considering their quality.  As nearly as I can tell, these are very close copies of the original ramrods.

About two years ago, I bought a Sharps Borchardt military rifle in good condition with an excellent bore.  Like many (most?) of the breed, it had a ramrod from some unknown muzzle loader substituted for the original.  I checked the S&S web site, and while they had such listed, they were “currently out of stock.”  Of course, I added my email to the list as one to be notified if these ramrods ever became available again, but I was pessimistic to say the least.  Early this year, they appeared in the catalog again.  Of course, I bought one and am more than satisfied.

I’ve dealt with S&S Firearm before, and have found them to be very accommodating.  And this wasn’t the first time I was pleasantly surprised at what obscure parts and accessories they stock.
