Ray,

The one time I tried to get ahold of Russ Weber it took two weeks to get a reply. By that time I'd gone onto someone else.

You might try leaving a PM to "Singleshot" on here. Look his name up in the member list. I have one of his and they're ok.

Although it is highly spoken of and seems to be well made, I can't speak with much authority on the Weber unit, having seen only a few and used only a couple (and those a couple of times each.)  I DO know about the ones made by Willis (singleshot) Gregory.  I bought my first one for a high-wall I own, then had him custom fabricate one for my Peregrine.  When I bought my Ruger #1 offhand rifle there was no question...I just called Willis!  Wink  That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

One of the BS makers---poor choice of phrase I Know.  posted recently that he had developed some sort of medical situation and was having to curtail his activity temporarily----I do not remember which one it was,  maybe somebody else can fill in that blank---might be the guy you're trying to get in contact with.

Ray,

While you're waiting for Willis to heal up you can do like a lot of people have done in the past. Just take a cartridge and take a dowel that just fits inside the case and cut it off so it's between 1/32" to 1/16" ahead of a maximun length case, and you're all set. A more elegant solution is to use a brass rod instead of the dowel.

There are some caveats tho. You haven't mentioned anything about your gun so you'll need a tapered bullet.... which you'll need anyway for breech seating. The throat will have to be slightly tapered which you'll also need for a breech seater. I've seen breech seater rods bent in guns with no throat.

Most important for the cartridge case seater is that you'll have to have an action like the Stevens 44 1/2 that rocks slightly so as to cam the case in. Other actions will work but you'll have to have a throat and bullet that almost fully seat by themselves before the action is able to be closed.

That'll get you by till Willis is able to help you.  Smiley

  Willis,

Know what you mean about those crutches. Was on them for 8 weeks a coupla years ago, plus 8 weeks of rehab. Glad it's nothing REAL serious!

Depending on you action type, a breech seater can vary from the aforementioned plugged case to the complex cam and lever mechanical designs. The key is which action you have.  The Stevens/CPA's work well wiht just a plugged case.   Many of the early breech seaters were simple push rod affairs some straight. some a bit dog-legged.  With soft alloy you can push-seat a tapered bullet quite easily.  A straight cylinder cast of linotype, will take some serious leverage--or a 5 lb hammer.

BTW hammers do work.  After my hands got sore pushing and thumping my first push seater  (browning Hiwall 45-70) I ressorted to a small hammer, and there are several regualrs on the line at Etna Green who use them.  My first push seater was a plugged case wiht the head drilled through and a solid fibreglas  3/8 rod wiht a ball on one end--an old short-starter I think-- epoxxied into the hole in the head of the case at enough of an angle to clear the scope.  Worked fine and I still have it in case of an emergency

Hi Guys
thanks for the input. I do have a pusher but did want something a little nicer
Willis; sorry to hear about the knee, I had knee surgery a few years ago and know what kind of pain that can be, in both places, if you get my drift,so when the knee is ready we'll talk again about a seater.
thanks again everybody
have a nice day

Willis,

Yeah 8 weeks on crutches is a bummer. I pushed my kneecap 90 degrees to the left and tore the quad muscle off it. 8 weeks with a soft cast, and like you no wgt. on the leg. What really bugged me was it was my right leg so no driving for about 10 weeks. But, I cheated quite a bit and was able to stand and cast bullets and generally get around ok. Friends would drive me around when I needed it and brought in groceries and such. But 8 weeks cooped up in the house? Geez! I hope I never have to go thru that again.

Ray,

Of course you want something a little fancier for a breech seater. Wayne and I were just suggesting some alternatives till Willis can make you one. I got mine with a rose wood handle. He gives you several choices but I thought the rose wood would set it out from the common run. It does!

Russ Weber was just at the Stars and Stripes Benchrest competition and the Pacific ISSRA Pacific Northwest regional. He is now heading to the Modesto shoot and then the RKS International Benchrest competition and the Canadian International Schuetzenfest in Canada. I expect he will not be available until July. He will be then going to the shoot at Raton.
