Opinion of Green Mountain RF Barrels.

I have a nice Stevens 44 ½ in caliber .22 Short and I would like to make an extra barrel for it in caliber .22LR.  The Stevens barrels can be changed with little more than a screwdriver.  A Green Mountain Winchester No. 3 Octagon barrel would be a perfect fit to the forearm I have and I could have a .22LR barrel for it with little work.  Have any of you experience with the Green Mountain .22 RF barrels and what is your opinion of them?

Thanks, MP

I had Steve Durren rebarrel my 38-55 'wall with a GM barrel.  My Earle/Wesson#1 has been done with a GM barrel.  I beleive he did the SS Classic wiht a GM barrel.   I've asked him to order a GM barrel for another of my projects--a 22 rf.  Steve has used their 22 rf barrels and is real happy with them from what I can tell.

A bunch of guys who shoot at Etna green use them.  I have not heard a negative thing about them. obviously there may be exceptions and problems in any manufactured item, but it looks like their QC is high so I have every confidence in them for my rifles.

MP,

My recently completed Stevens 44 was fit with a #3 Green Mountain .22 LR barrel.  I haven't had a chance to really wring it out on paper, but initial indications are it's going to be a shooter.  Some initial sighting-in groups at 100 yds (iron sights) ran right around 1.25", with Federal 711-B standard velocity ammo.  I hope to be able to do some more work real soon, with some better ammo.

Thanks I’ve ask around at several places and read many of the comments at rimfirecentral.com about GM barrels and think I will order one and give it a try.   MP

Well it's not a SS, but I put a GM bbl (22rf) on my 10-22 a few years ago and it's exceptionally accurate.  I asume they use the same tooling to make the oct RF blanks.  They also have excellent customer service, and if it's not to your liking, they'll make it right.
After  using many different ML barrels in 35 yrs of gunmaking, I've used GM barrels exclusively for the past 10 yrs.  At a 3rd the price of some "name dropper" barrels  Wink, GM ML Bbls hold many national records.
