Just picked up a Riedl SS, .250-3000, interesting action design, good trigger.
Anyone know anything about these?  Any articles written about them?

Vigillinus,

Frank De Haas had a short critique on James Riedl's action in "Single Shot Actions--Their Design and Construction  (1986)."  De Haas bought Number 006 in 1974 and based his conclusions on that early model, noting that Riedl was already working on improvements.  No telling how many examples were made.  The patent was issued in 1972.

The action is plenty big and strong enough for modern cartridges.  It has a through-bolt for the stock.

He thought the rack-and-pinion action of block and lever offered no advantage and had reservations about the trigger and safety, which he said lacked ruggedness.  He also didn't like the firing pin retractor.  It may be that Riedl changed these features later.
