ASSRA-marked Ruger #1

I was able to aquire a rifle based on an ASSRA #1 action this weekend---unfortunately not in a schuetzen caliber but thats fixable.  I have seen several over the years "on the table" at EG.  and I am kind of curious about them.

what is the story about how they were produced and made available? does anybody else have one--what caliber is it--who did the work on it?  I might be interested in an article on them--do you have pictures you could send me?  If you don;t want to post here you can email directly at { DWStiles   at   hotmail.com }

Wayne,

Been so long ago that I forget most of the details, but there were several articles over several issues in the Journal that should give you all the details.

I'm sure Rudi can dig them out for you.

Might make a good article for you to write up to.  Grin (couldn't resist that!)

Thanks Pete????,   I already bumped Rudi about it.

Writing an article myself ????  just doing an editorial is enough. I already make enough mistakes; besides I have my hands more than full just trying to organize it and get all you cats headed in the right direction at the same time LOL.

dw  my understanding is that Bill Ruger made 100 actions availale to the assra. I had no 11 and 12 which I got from Norm Lammers (friend of Bill Ruger)  No 11 had a douglas barrel and was chambered and fitted by Ray Puccetti  in .32-40

Thanks Dick,  that  Lammers/Eesly actioned rifle is now the pride and joy of one of our other members who shoots it at the EG matches.  I think it is one of rifles Dale photographed for our upcoming article(s) on the Rugers #1/3s.  I have several other members tell me that they bought the actions but have them put away.  It appears than life members had an option to buy the one that matched their life membership number---wonder how many did?.
Oddly enough I talked to a couple of the Ruger Collectors group at the NRA show and they had never herd of that specific run, and were REAL interested in them.

If only we could interest Ruger in  making up some rifles in 32-40, 38-55 etc on the 1H or 1V patterns (to have the heaviest production weight).

Some big distributors "talk" Ruger into special runs now and then...
If enough people were to call and try to make such a deal with said distributor... maybe with the backing and support of a national association dedicated to single shot rifles...

Garu Staup tried to get Ruger to do a run of action for us but they (Ruger) said "No Way"

I think Rugers lawyer have anyone who even thinks of making "just an action" for someone killed on the spot.... The days of getting an ACTION from Ruger are LONG and forever gone.

MIGHT have better luck getting complete RIFLES made...
Or maybe not...
If they can make special commemorative rifles, they could if they chose to make a run of .32-40's in #1's.

After the lawyers shot down just making an action we sugested  making them up in 32-40, 38-55 and 45-70 as octagon barreled actions. They hemed and hawed and then said no. They didn't want to get in to it unless they could put them thin little whippy barrels on um. Engeneering told them heavy barrels would create problems with the hanger. Plus the lawyers were afraid that we are too stupid to stock a rifle on our own and would sue when it went bad.

Undecided
They say the wheels of justice turn slow and with this thread starting in april I guess I do too!!! I'll just blame it on farming cuz this is the first time I have seen this thread

so would ruger make a run? and in older chamberings?

here is what I would love to see is a 50-110 bufflo rifle in a more afordable gun than just sharps repos

and for the paper pookers to have a  schuetzen available right off the shelf just like the good old days but in a more affordable gun [palm ball hooked butt and set trigger   Shocked  gotta love that!

Way too much money to be made in "commemoratives" and "Special Editions" for the 47th anniversery of the Rose Parade or some such. Usually just some simple laser engraving and a slight no-cost modifications to standard specs and with standard calibres.
I REALLY LIKE the ruger ss so I'm not "diss'n" them at all; but to make a schuetzen of it, even if they sold'em as completed arms in 32-40/38-55/45-70 since actions only are out of the question; do you think that the barrels would be up to snuff, quality and twist-wise? Of course you'd still have to tune and tweak the action, restock, sights, etc etc.  I'm not sure the game would be worth the candles.   Personally I'd like to see a version made with a tang for tang sights, (of course it's not legal for BPCR which would be a huge cash cow)
I think that building up a used one, rebarrelling and rechambering is one of the best bets for entry level--considering the going prices for most other suitable actions.
The biggest problem with a schuetzen Ruger as I see it is the trigger.  Some have grafted various DST to the action and ther were/are a couple other SST setups available.  However just removing the tang safety and all the related levers and springs improves a lot of drag and friction.  Frank Zika is working on producing a better grade replacement; not a set trigger as I understand it but a competition grade single trigger.  a protoype has been developed and I understand it is very nice.  I believe Frank is currently working on getting parts into production, I hope so, I sure could use one for next season.
