This story talks about the "dilemma" of culling a herd of 4500 Bison in a national park, due to disease... bovine tuberculosis and brucellosis.

They're estimating it will take ten years and $66 million US to destroy the entire herd.

Are they kidding? Or just not real bright (as government agencies often are not)?

Offer $200 a head, invite any hunter with a single shot to bag his fill...
Problem solved, less than $1 million. You'd have a few years of some nice "business hunts". Make the trip, bag 20-30-50 head.. collect your bounty. Go home, buy more rifles.

Can you eat bison infected with bovine tuberculosis and brucellosis?

Hey, I'd make the trip up north with my Sharps and my Werndl (once I get some brass made for it)...

OOORRRRR...they could charge the hunters a fee for the privilege of hunting these buffalo.  It's called selling a hunting license!  I for one would be pretty excited about the prospect of unlimbering a .45-70 high-wall or a .40-85 Ballard or even a .40-70 Maynard to harvest a buffalo in the old fashioned way.  Think of the money that would be brought into the economy for accomodations, local guides, etc. if such a hunting program were available.

Oh yeah, the antis would hate that because the hunters would be having fun participating in a blood sport.  It's better to let the animals starve or die (slowly and painfully) of disease than meet an "inhumane death" at the end of a bullet's path.  Maybe they could have an "adopt a buffalo" program like the US guvmint did with the wild donkeys a few years ago.  That program MUST have been successful since we don't hear any more about it.  Oh yeah, the wild jackasses are the minority party in Washington now...that's where THEY all went!

Rant over, but it does seem a shame, doesn't it?

(Dont slam me) I don't like killing animals. Just for the fact that I really don't like the taste so I have no reason to,  but being in the medical profession this would be more of a humanitarian act and I would be all about the hunt and I would glady buy a license. I would love to get a couple buffalo hides.

I have to admit, that i'm not a hunter either... I have two deer that come around here to eat the apples that fall from the tree in my front yard... and I've gotten to think of deer as more like pets than targets.
I don't have any problem whatsoever with those that DO hunt, it's just not for me.

I was thinking that the usual hunting license fee arangement, while effective, would take 5+ years. If they really want to depopulate that herd to keep the diseases from spreading to other bison populations... paying that $100 or $200 per skin would speed that process up enormously.

Even with my inherent laziness, getting paid to hunt buffalo (even if I AM spending 10 times what I'm getting paid to do it...) would drag my chubby carcass off the couch.

And since I like beef, if those critters are still edible with that nasty cough they have, I'd fill a few freezers too! (I'm skeptical that the meat would be good.. but a guy can hope..)
