Charlie Dell died about 4pm this afternoon.
There will be no funeral or service of any kind. That's the way he wanted it.
That's all I can tell you at this time.

Saw this post yesterday, and just couldn't respond. I prayed for Charlie and his family last night, and I know he's in good hands.

I'd like to run some sort of tribute in the next issue of the J. I solicit short (one or two paragraphs) comments that I can use.

DWS Charlie had a intresting life. I only learned bits and pieces over the years. A full obit would be very intresting. I would like to see people who knew him well and long come forward.

Boats,
Charlie didn't want an obituary. Whether or not one shuold be put together for the Journal is for others to decide. He has told me much about his early life but I'm not competent to speak about his many years in Schuetzen. I have mixed emotions about this.

Russ, Knowing Charlie"s quiet low-key self-effacing manner I can understand his feelings and desires. I can even sympathize with them. It is very natural for those closest to him to wish to honor those wishes.
However I also feel that in many ways Charlie failed to recognize and properly value his own significance and contributions to our little nich in the precision rifle world. In that way he filled the part of the true southern gentleman. In many ways though he was part of our bridge back to the historic past that we share. I respectfully feel that for the sake of future generations of shooters to understand their heritage we must give Charlie the place of honor and respect he is clearly due. Others may feel differently of course

DWS,
Well I agree with you but I don't have Charlie's history to help you. Singleshot might and some of the EG shooters too.

I did an bio of Charlie Dell for the Journal several years ago. I spent a week with Charlie to gather the info. At first, he was VERY reluctant to allow me to proceed. However, I explained that his work was too important to Schuetzen shooting to just ignore this. He agreed and was very open with me.
In addition to his Schuetzen work, he was a member of the "greatest generation" and served in the South Pacific. We are losing that whole generation to old age and our nation will never be the same again.
We are diminished...a bunch.

Dw--Russ--Dale-and others;
I think a tribute To Charlie Dell is certainly in order, I'll be sending him a tribute every day for the rest of my life. This tribute can not be done correctly without the help of Willis Gregory and John Bancroft and others, some already mentioned. leadball

As I recall Charle told me once that right after the war he ran a machine shop in occupied Japan using POW's He had a lot to say about the people and how they were talented machinist. Thats the kind of obscure thing that not many people would know. I bet there are a lot of things avalable if we look.

I tell you what else would be intresting to the readers some photos of Charles basement machine shop. His underground range as well as the rail gun he used for bullet testing.
I don't thing there is another set up like that exisiting. We have all read of them In Dr Manns book but Charlie had the actual thing and used it frequently.
I do respect his last wishes but knowing him I am sure he would approve of advancing knowledge of the sport in any way he could.
