Montana Vintage Arms Belding & Mull Powder Mea

Perhaps this has been discussed here before but...  Montana Vintage ARms is making a Belding & Mull style powder measure.  Got mine today.  Like everything MVA makes this is a work of art.  Attaches much more firmly to the workbench than the original or the recent Buffalo Arms replica.  Much more substantially built and, I think, not any more expensive than the Buffalo Arms copy.  Infinitely graduated powder cylinder.

This is a real work of art!

klw;
It is funny how things work. I was again reading the BPC News and saw the add for the measure in there. It does indeed look good. The measure is a micrometer. It should be repeatible.

Always loved gun related gadgets, maybe more than the guns.  So when MVA brought out a Belding & Mull powder measure I just had to try it.  I already owned one of the replicas that Buffalo Arms has been selling.  And I just bought an original on e-bay.  Alas there was another fellow who wanted this so it got expensive.

But I now have one of each.  I also have a replica powder measure cylinder from Cunard.

The Buffalo Arms copy has a rather odd powder reservoir attachment that I don't like but the unit works.

The MVA unit, when put next to the other two, is CLEARLY the superior product.  REALLY well made.

BUT there is one oddity.  There are four different powder cylinders here.  One original to each unit and the one from Cunard.  They are all nominally the same diameter so each one should work in each unit.  But they don't.  Must be off by an a 0.0001 or so but it is enough.  They work with the units they came with but not necessarily with the other two.  So close it hurts but they don't interchange.

Of course the MVA powder cylinder is unquestionally the most graduated.  I think that that thing is literally infinitely and repeatable adjustable.

FWIW, at last report the "new" Belding & Mull company in PA was still in business and making not only an exact continuation of the best version of the old production, but the same basic unit with a couple of larger reservoirs as well as standard, magnum and super magnum drop tubes in both standard and micrometer versions. Shocked

I personally still use my original unit with a custom drop tube that incorporates a Starrett micrometer head for a TRUE micrometer measure with near perfect repeatability.  I plan on continuing with it unless and until I can justify a Harrell Schuetzen model.   Wink

When were they still in business because I certainly tried to call them and got nowhere.  Don't think Buffalo ARms expected another shipment from them.  And their powder measure let a little to be desired.

Owning one of MVA's sights and Hadley disk I am sure the new measures are top notch.

However I have one of Belding and Mulls "New" measures.  It's not new and improved but exactly like the old ones.  I don't think you can call it a reproduction since some of the parts seem to be old stock and even the boxes are from 50 yr old stock.

It works very well. It did take some working in to perform smoothly.  I had to lap the drop tube and put a little bit of graphite on the slide to make it work smooth. I bet the old ones when delivered had to be worked in the same way. The micrometer works perfectly and the measure is very good with black powder, something I don't run through my modern measures.

I have a Harrells and for precision it's the one to have, everything about it is well designed and built.

I bought the B&M to go with my Schuetzen outfit and fit the traditonal style.  It's a choice and I am glad we have 3 first class measures to pick from.

I didn't quite follow this.

Is your new Belding & Mull powder measure one made by MVA?

klw,

     The last address I had for them was the one in the latest issue I have of the SSR J.  It's the same one (I think) that I had when I did a product review a couple of years ago.  Try this;

         Belding & Mull, Inc
         1878 Port Matilda Highway
         Philipsburg, PA 16866

     Phone: (814) 342-1800

Hope this helps.  I got a few repair parts from them and was very satisfied with what they sent.  I got the idea that it was a small operation but that the guy(s) involved were shooters and genuinely interested in providing a good product.

The Belding & Mull powder measures sold by Buffalo Arms are, well, odd.  Comparing it to an original, the attachment of the powder reservoir to the body is very different and just plane sloppy.  You can fit that with a lot of blue loktite but for the price these things were going for it should have been done right in the first place.  This "reproduction" is no longer being made.  The company isn't answering their phone.  Think that they just wandered off and started making something else.

So the only Belding & Mull design in production today is the MVA.  That is certainly a vast improvement over the original in just about every possible way.  MUCH better mounting.  Beautiful micrometer powder cylinder.  Excellent workmanship throughout.  WELL worth the money.

I too have a couple Harrells.

KLW

It is confusing, My B&M is made by Belding and Mull with the address that Froggy gave. From pictures only it seems to me MVA's is improved on the B&M design.

I don't know when the original Belding & Mull company finally went under but it was some considerable time ago.

When the first replica of their powder measure came out it was being made by a company using their old name.  This this first replica, the one briefly sold by Buffalo Arms, is a Belding & Mull, 2nd generation.  Except for the attachment of the powder reservoir it is ok but nothing special.  Not inexpensive either as I recall.

Buffalo Arms had a lot of listing for these.  Several reservoir sizes, two different kinds of powder cylinders (one non-micrometer and one micrometer model) and seemed to put a lot of effort into advertising these units.  However the company lost interest just about the time this started to get going sales wise.  An eventually they just weren't shipping anymore.  So what Buffalo Arms still has is all there is going to be.

The confusing point, of course, is that two companies used the exact same name.

The MVA unit is of this generic style but a vastly improved product.  I don't think that MVA's unit is all that much more expensive than the Buffalo ARms model.

Could be 3 companies as I don't think the current B&M production is the same as the 2nd generation. But I could be wrong.  I found them to be pretty nice guys trying to fill a demand.

In any event the one I have works well but is in no way new or improved, it's exactly like the old ones.  Modern methods and the benifit of development over a number of years would surely make a better measure. And I am sure MVA's is a good one. As they say you pay your money and make your choice.

Some times the old stuff is not as good as we remember it.  While I am no collecter some time ago I bought a pre-64 model 94 Winchester.  Fellow in the neighborhood had bought it new and only fired one box through the rifle. What he did not tell me is it would not feed from the magazine. Something wrong with the follower from the factory. In fit and finish I compared it to my Marlin 336 and found it was very inferior. A collector bought it from me for double what I paid and I was glad to see it go.

>>>In fit and finish I compared it to my Marlin 336 and found it was very inferior.<<<

I don't want to start a flame war, but I have three Marlin lever actions and NO Winchesters (1895 new issue 45/70, 336 30/30, and new issue 25/20). I have been EXTREMELY happy. They shoot like bolt actions are supposed to (and I have several bolt actions [actually, more than several] to compare with).

I guess the truth will "out", I am a Marlin man (FWIW, I have a modern Ballard, also - "Life is good!".

Good Morning Guys
I am confused the story seems to be Belding & Mull measures are : not being made
;  made by Belding & Mull
     : made by somebody else
    and MVA lookalike
I talked to Dave I believe,at Buffalo last week, and he said he is expecting more measuring tubes in a couple weeks
the ad for Belding & Mull in  the Magazine says Buffalo is selling thier measure . I tried to order a measuring tube to replace one I made from a 45/70 case and carridge bolt.
am I waiting for a dead horse to rise or what? does anybody know for sure?

Happy Days to All
