Rem RB #1 marked 45 CTGE?

I have an old RB marked 45 CTGE just in front of the forend cap.  Fired cartridges messure as follows: OAL 2.0", Base is .515" straight up to a slight shoulder at 1.25", the upper neck from there is .495 straight.  THe chamber appears original and the 26" octigon barrel is 1.085 at the action and 1.000 at the muzzle.  It was cut for the flip up rear barrel combination peep sight. Any ideas on the caliber? The SN is 2XXX.

Thanks for any input.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Well your case description sounds similar to the .45-50 Peabody, but I'm not sure Rem. ever offered their #1 rifles in the Peabody cartridge? I know better than to ever say never!

Charles:

I remember reading about a rifle with this caliber designation in one of Grant's books recently. It seems to me it was on a Phoenix rifle. I will see if I can find the reference again.

Was this a Remington-made rolling block, or could it have been a Whitney-Laidley?
