W J Hauk rifles

Print Post
I am going to look at a Hauk rifle tomorrow, and I am searching for information about them. The only printed info that I have is in a 1951 edition of Wallack's Modern Accuracy. There isn't much there. The owner of this rifle states that 145 rifles were produced. He also said that W J Hauk passed away in 1985. If anyone has any information to add or correct anything above I would like hear from you. Thanks, Dave

SS1,
I posted a query re Hauck rifles a while back.  Information on them is almost as scarce as Hauck rifles.  In de Haas' Potpourri, FdH reviews a Mark Matteson action (pp. 37-40).  The article contains a bit of info on the Hauck & reports 145 actions & rifles built.  FdH cites a chapter on the Hauck in Single Shot Actions - Their Design & Construction.  Please keep us (or me) posted.

CheesyRichard,

I went and looked at the rifle, also went through some information that my friend has on Wilbur. He also has the original exchange of letters when this rifle was ordered. One of the sources he has is the sept-oct issue of the Journal. The cover has a picture of Wilbur and a short article. Two other sources are old issues of Gun Digest, which I have copies. If you would like I can go back and catalog the information he has. The rifle is a 6mm on a shortened Krag case. It is stocked in the california style, not in the style that Wilbur stocked the few that I am familiar with. Thanks for the reply.    Dave Norman

Russ Gilmore of the Rifled Arms Historic Association has, or had, a 30-40 Hauck sporter that was stocked by Creighton Audette  Very well done but a bit on the hefty side.  I never liked that action, the few I have seen (maybe three) had no safety catch and the lever clanked like a Sherman tank when operating it.

8)The two Gun Digests that have something on W. Hauk are the 1954 issue, which has a picture in the custom gun section. Also the 1952 issue has a short article by Col. townsend Whelen which was reprinted from the 1951 yearbook, Ult. in Rifle Prec. I have some pictures of my friends rifle which are developed yet.
