I have been exploring this same project for a friend, relining verus new barrel. A good liner such as TJ's wil cost 3.45 an inch or $100 + for a 30" barrel verus $144.95 for a new Green Mountian barrel from Midway. IMO the GM barrel is  well worth the extra $50, of course these costs do not include your gunsmith's labor costs.  A problem arises with the dia. of the existing barrel when relining to a large cal such as 40/65 Win--it must be large enough to accept this large liner.  The GM barrels come to you 35 or 36 inch long full oct. Most all post on the ASSRA forum seem to like the GM barrels, I have just completed a Peabody Side Hammer project using a GM barrel.     leadball

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

I'm with Leadball, I don't think there's enough material in most factory .43 Spanish RB barrels to allow a reline to .40-65 caliber. Although the liner is cheaper, the cost of installation, will be just about equal to the cost of fitting a GM barrel, and the larger diameter GM barrel will probably stay more accurate as it gets warmed up.

Relining is a technique that works best with guns that are in good overall shape but have a bad bore. If this were the case (and the O.D. is large enough) the job generaly runs about $200 to $250 to install a TJ's liner. Most Spanish rollers seem to need some work on the extractor so that would add to the cost.

If you were planning on doing more work on the gun like restocking and refinishing, then the new barrel would be the way to go. The new barrel would at minimum need a new forearm and bluing. The new barrel is definately more expensive than relining but, unless your trying to preserve the exterior of the gun, can produce better results.

Sheriff Dudley,

I don't know of any gunsmiths in your area, perhaps someone else can chime in here and give you that info, but it's quite common to send your work to a 'smith in another part of the country.

That being said, I do this type of work, in fact I have a Marlin lever gun on the bench right now that I'm relining to .40-65. You can see my ad in the Single Shot Journal. The ad will be for Johnson's Sporting Goods in Adrian, Michigan. If you want to call the number is 517-265-2545.

There also several very good gunsmiths around the country that can handle this work, a couple of them are frequent contributors to this board.

Sheriff dudley:

The only reason to reline is to preserved the original barrel. It is the one modification that will not drastically damage the collector value of a gun.

Howsomever, there is little collector's value in a Spanish roller unless it happens to be complete and pristine, and in that case it should be left alone.  That coupled with the fact that the barrel has marginal dimensions for relining suggests rebarreling as the better option. With a new barrel you get to choose your length and contour and such to suit your desired uses.

Posting a rifle to a gunsmith is no big deal. You are much better off sending it to a smith that knows single shot rifles than having it done by a local smith that is not familiar with the beast. They are different than bolt rifles. You would not go wrong by sending it to the Bushenmacher. If I did not do my own work I would send my rifles to him.
