1800's SF Target Shooting & New 1878 Borchardt

I recently purchased a very strange/unique Borchardt rifle that I am trying to understand.  It was made during the very end of production, which explains some (but I don't think all) of the oddities.  Details of the rifle:
1. Wood looks like standard #1 Long Range, with checkered pistol grip, ebony forend tip, and a "keyed" forend attachment.  It appears that a heel sight was originally fit to the stock and repaired prior to shipment (wood finish is the same and age of inlet repair end grain is the same).
2. Barrel is a Mid-Range length (30-inches) and the rifle is fit with original Sharps Mid-Range sighting equipment: #2 windgauge front sight with spirit level and Patent Mid-Range tang sight.
3. The strange part...the rifle is chambered for .45 27/8 (.45-110).

The person I bought it from thought it was made to be used as a sporting rifle, but the full-blown target features make me think otherwise.  I was recently told my someone on the Sharps forum that .45-110 was used in the San Francisco area as a target cartridge, and since this rifle came from the Loma Mar region I think that might be reasonable.

I'm looking for some help documenting the use of this cartridge on target ranges and would appreciate any help at all (or other thoughts on the rifle).

Thanks,
Trey

taw1126:  Go to the Shiloh Sharps forum and post a message for Kenny Wasserberger to answer this question.  I recall he has info on just such a rifle(s) you discribe  that were made up in the 110 cal. for target shooting.  He is a big fan of the 45-110's and has mentioned this Borchardt configuration before in the is calibur.   Best regards steve witt

I'm actually somewhat of a regular over there, and I'm definitely aware of Kenny's fondness for the .45-110 in Sharps rifles.  You have a good suggestion as far as asking him, but I think the .45-110 Borchardts he has mentioned in the past are true long-range rifles built for Frank Hyde with 36-inch barrels.  It seems that from the Sellers book very few of those were documented and they were in a much lower serial number range.

Thanks,
Trey

Taw. I have a Rifle very much like yours. Mine has the Paneled action and is equiped with midrange sights. Which by the way will reach out to 1000 yds. Not much elevation left but will get there. I have gotton on at 1000 shooting the Postell bullet at 535 grs ahead og 10 gr 4759 and 100 grs of Elephant Fg casefull and the bullet stuffed in 1/8" deep. The forend on mine is not keyed, it is held by the standard two screw arrangment. You have to realise that the last 1 to 2 years the factory was still building Rifles they were using up stock. So a lot of non standard rifles were shipped. Most folks believed that Sharps went broke. Not so. The company was privatley held by a group of investors. They made a couple of feeble attempts to develop repeating rifles and failed. At that point the investors made a business decision to "FOLD" the company and wring out all the cash they could from the physical assets. Land, Buildings, Machinery and such. If your rifle is one of those very late assembly's it will be in the serial # range up around 17,000 or later. The other side is that Borchardts were very well "MADE TO GAGE" and are very interchangable. I have restored a number of Borchardts simply by accumilating original parts, barrels, actions, wood etc. and ended up with some very nice rifles, not original but to the quick eye appear to be all correct. I have considered my my Rifle to be an Express Rifle as .45 X 2 7/8" was one of the express calibers. But it does shoot the heavy bullets very well. Only weighs about 11 Lbs though and the load I described kills on both ends. Congradulations on a accumilating a fine rifle. Regards, FITZ.
