Browning B78, same as Winchester highwall?

Does anyone know what the thread pitch and TPI is for the Browning B78? I have a target barrel that was taken off an orignal Wenchester Highwall (at least thats what I was told it was) and now I need an action to put it back on. The Barrel I have is what I belive to be 16 tpi. Thanks for any Info anyone might have.

I have no idea, and none of the DeHaas books I have mention it. The Winchester large shank is 15/16-16. The B-78 was available in the belted mag's, and I doubt they would have used a thread this small. If I had to guess I'd say it's at least a 1-16, or more likely an M26-1.5.

Doesn't really matter, anyway, as the extractor cuts are VERY different for the two actions...most likely would have to completely re-thread the barrel to clean this area up.  Your best bet to re-use that barrel is to get another highwall action...I'm not sure, but have heard that the threads in the Uberti highwalls are the original size.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Actually the first DeHaas book, Single SHot Rifles and Actions, shows both to be 16 V threads per inch. But the deal breaker is the diameter of 1.15" on the Browning, and .935" on the large shank Winchester 1885, so it wont work. The diagrams are on pages 323, and 334 of DeHaas.
Hope this helps.

I think the barrel I have is the larger shank, but I will have to mic it out this weekend just as soon as I find my mic. (I really hate moving. Friends tring to help out, I have found 3 boxes marked "STUFF".....  Angry )
