Gunsmith willing to build an 1880 Fraser Action?

I am looking for a Gunsmith to build me an 1880 Dan'l Fraser Falling-Block Action. Anyone up to the task?

I have read that a gunsmith named Tom Griffin built some a few years ago but I can't seem to find any contact info for him. Does anyone know how I can reach him?

Thank you,
Joshua W. Rich

Hello Folks

I think I have seen mention of a Fraser side lever rifle action "in current manufacture" on the accuratereloading forum.  I can't recall the model or much in the way of detail but a search there may turn somthing up.

Cheers - Foster

Mr. Dearmer:

Do you mean you are looking for someone to fabricate the action or build a rifle on an existing action?

If anyone should find a source for a Fraser action I sure enough would be interested.

Glenn, there was a write up in the March-April 2003 issue of the SSRJ about stocking Mr. Griffin's Fraser (part two).  More details might be found in whichever earlier issue part one was in.

Try this e-mail address:
tomkgriffin@mail.ev1.net

I established contact with him through AR. Apparently he builds a very few Fraser actions each year.

What is so great about this action?

Consider it a blend of good design, compactness, looks - and rarity. These can be made into really pretty rifles, are very strong by design and - if you omit the safety features - have relatively few parts.  It is a true falling block, with internal hammer.  Contrary to most rifles of the area, he also used the stock bolt for attaching the butttstock while keeping the tangs.
Of course, Daniel Fraser made top-quality rifles (and knew very well how to), so that also plays a role, true...
I would personally rate it better than the Farquharson, but for more info - just check the Dehaas book, 'Single shot rifles and actions'
Of course, it isn't better than a Martini  Grin 8) ,but it most certainly looks quite a bit nicer.  And it has sidelever operation too, making for a very trim rifle/action combination.
Only thing - copying those won't be cheap, I'm afraid, unless you could go to mass-production techniques.  Yes, I would also like one, but I cannot afford it...

Please don't get suckered into one of the small "Fraser" actions made for Cape Outfitters and Thad Scott. These little actions looked mighty cute and were priced right when they were offered new, a few decades ago now. As I recall they were offered in 22RF and 22 Hornet, and were not a success in either configuration. Frank de Haas wrote an in-depth condemnation of them before he died, and got sued for it. Either he won or else it never went to court, it's generally acknowledged that these actions aren't worthy of the Fraser name. They are NOT a smaller version of the original Fraser and cannot be guaranteed to function properly. Too bad.
Good luck, Joe
