Who makes the best .22 rimfire barrels today?  They have to be chrome moly, no Stainless steel. Thanks, MP

In my carefully considered opinion, ANY of the true match barrel makers, Hart, Shilen, Douglas, Lilja, etc will give you all that you can use. I have been using Shilen for the past few years and have been most happy with them. However, I would be just as happy with any of the top makers.

More important than a particular barrel maker is the person who chambers and fits the barrel - I use match chambers, only!

I think for services offered, commitment to quality, and reasonable time of delivery, Lilja wins hands down.  I've never heard anything bad about the quality either, they're always mentioned as one of the "best of the best".

They offer twists of 9, 15, 16, 17 and two diameters.  Offer to match existing barrel contours, or any special contour you want.  Octagon, round, fluted.

8 week delivery.

Cost of about $400 - $450 for your hearts desire of contour, twist, and diameter.  $265 for round blank or standard round contour.

I don't think you can do much better than that unless you want a plain blank with nothing special.

Ron Smith (RKS Barrels) Wimborne, Alberta makes great cut rifle barrels of superior quality.  He also makes gain twist barrels in either chrome moly or stainless steel. RKS barrels are also tapered 4 / 10,000" between the chamber and muzzle. This choking down reduces chances of gas cutting around side of bullet as it travels down the bore.

RKS barrels are reknowned internationally in both the high power long range and schuetzen disciplines. World wide these barrels have been winning competitions for many years.

Ron can be reached at 1-403-631-2405

Thanks for all the info.

I have a Martini International MkII with a RKS barrel and I know of another half dozen that Ron has made up with .22 match chambers.

I have also seen Anschutz rifles converted to RKS barrels for silhoute competitions.

They all perform exceptionally well as evidenced in that the owners never put them up for sale. These are always keepers.

If you want one you have to get your own built.

For what it's worth I think the Olympic Champion in English Match (prone) used a Lilja drop-in barrel.

I believe Lilja barrels have been responsible for more records in recent years than any other make in both Small Bore and Rimfire BR disciplines. However I do agree with Dale that any of the top makers deliver all most of us can utilize. There is a level of accuracy beyond only which only a small percentage of shooters can tell the difference.

I think that a lot of time, barrel makers become "fashionable". Shooter "A" wins a major match and is asked which barrel maker does he use. Then next time around, several more shooters are using that barrel makers barrels. Soon, it is a larger number of shooters using a particular barrel makers barrels. Naturally, there will be more winners with that brand.

A friend of mine was shooting alongside the AMU bunch from Ft. Benning. Some of the best shooters in the country come from the AMU (after all, that is their JOB). He got to talk to their resident gunsmith. He stated that ALL of the major match barrel manufacturers make good barrels and ALL of them occasionally make a barrel that won't shoot. They have a fixture that allows them to fire the barrel for accuracy before they spend a lot of time fitting it to a rifle. They also have the luxury of "retiring" a barrel way before we do. They will see more barrels in a month than we will in a lifetime. I listen to what they say...

My conclusion is now explained Grin. Use a match barrel by one of our top makers and you will be happy. Of course, if you get a bad one, return it and any of them will replace a bad barrel.
