Ballard  schuetzen rifle caliber

Hi,
I have the above which I know very little about. I do not know the caliber but a 9mm pistol shell will fit most of the way in the receiver. It's a ballard rolling block and was made by Brown Mfg Co. of Newburyport Mass. The block will fire both a shell or a breech load, or I am guessing that it will fire both kinds of loads because of a cap opening as well as a firing pin. This gun does not have a forearm but heavy brass ring around the barrel which I think was used with a palm rest or a tripod. It only has an 18" pencil scope for siting. The stock is walnut with a cheek rest and has a curved alumium butt piece. It has a round 28" barrel with a 1'" extension The serial number is 20400 series.
My question on this gun  have I enough information to determine
the caliber or can some one tell how determine th caliber.
I do have a few photos that could email to you.
After slugging the it appears that the above is .35 caliber.
  Thanks in advance, Ray

Ray, the fore-end and stock situations both suggest radical alterations have been performed on this rifle, but if the block, barrel and chamber are still like they left the factory I would start by looking at the .38 rim fire round.  It is about the same as a .38 special in size but has an outside lubricated heel bullet the same diameter as the outside of the case.  A center fire/percussion combination is highly unlikely...how would the firing pin get to the center of the case head when the flash hole in the percussion mode must be there?  I would suggest you take a look at Layman's book (cheap but a good starting place) or better yet Dutcher's (more expensive, but quite definitive) to learn more.

I don't have my copy of Dutchers book handy but I have seen a Ballard that would fire both RIMfire and percussion. There is a nipple under the hammer. The idea was if you ran out of loaded ammo, you could punch a hole in the base of your empty shells and reload them and fire them with the percussion cap like an early Maynard. The .38 rimfire round was fairly popular in the early Ballards, Kentucky used Ballards in .38 rimfire in the Civil War.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Hi,
Does anyone know how to remove the breechblock from the above
gun. Do you have to take the stock lug off or remove the barrel? I
do not get enough clearence  to remove the breechblock. When I
remove the lever screw and push the breech assembly as far forword as it wil go it doesn't clear the barrel. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Ray

The disassembly of the Brown Ballard is like other Ballards. You remove the lever screw, and then open the lever. With the lever fully open, lower the breechblock, while keeping it rearward into the receiver. Since you have no auto extractor, you don't need to remove that first, like on later Marlin Ballards.
The whole breechblock with lever should come down together. They can be a little tricky, and hang up, so wiggle it and remember to not let it work forward, or it wont clear the opening.
One other thing! Be sure it isn't cocked when you try to take it down! Hammer must be lowered completely!
Hope this helps.

Hi Marlinguy
Your instructions worked just fine and the serial number on the
breech assembly is the same as the number on the frame.
It was a struggle to get it out but with a little presure it came
out. Thanks again, Ray
