B-78 stock on 1885 Browning?

Anyone know if a Browning B-78 stock, pistol grip and Monte Carlo cheekpiece, will go onto a straight grip Browning 1885?  The lower tang of the 1885 is very stubby and doesn't look like it would interfere with the pistol grip of the B-78/

Vigillinus,

The receivers on the two rifles are identical, as long as it isn't a BPCR or Traditional Hunter model, both those have upper tangs.  The difference might be in the length of the stock bolt, and its counterbore...might have to use the stockbolt for the particular stock.  The little "bump" of a lower tang (actually the trigger housing) won't make any difference, as that part is the same for both the grip versions.

thanks Greg.  I have one of the Wyoming 1885 Commemoratives with the 30" .25-06 barrel and an idiotic low comb crescent buttstock, will now see if I can find a B-78 for it.  Hope the checkering style is more or less the same, but that is a detail.

V., if you don't want that old stock after you find a replacement, send it to me...I always need "take-off" stocks for patterns, etc.  Send me a PM if you don't have plans for it.

as long as you are being so helpful let me ask you another Q:
will the forends interchange also?  I recall that some of the B-78s had octagon barrels.  Might be easier to find a matching B-78 butt and forend than hope that any stock I locate will match the existing forend in color, finish, checkering, etc.

will probably hang onto original wood as I will need it if I every resell the rifle.  But if you want to borrow it for dimensions, etc., that is no problem.

V., the forends are the same on the B78 and the run-of-the-mill 1885's...with the exception of barrel size.  My personal B78 had a rather light contour octagon barrel, and the 1885 I have now is a bit beefier.  The BPCR is entirely different, mostly because of a difference in extractor/ejector systems.  The checkering pattern (at least on my rifles) is very similar, as well.

The forend hanger bar, and the screw hole spacing, is the same for all the B78's and 1885's.

Matter of fact, nearly the only differences in the two actions is a pin that retains the trigger housing on the 1885 version, and the internal trigger mechanism itself...the actual housing is the same, just different internals.
