I just read the subject of BPCR accuaracy and enjoyed it a lot. A question that I haven't gotten answered locally is what type of group I should get at 50 yds. off the bench. I shoot a Ballard #3, 30" barrel, open sights, I don't know the barrel profile but it does have a match chamber. Recently, I have been shooting Wolf match target ( from Eley Club ) for practice and have shot some .535 10 shot groups and larger.I am just not certain what I should expect. Thanks Fred

Fred,
If you're using iron sights...... I'll assume tang rear and globe front...... this would be considered decent for the ammo you are using. With a better grade of ammo you should be able to do better. If you are using barrel sights I'd say you were doing excellently.
The accuracy you want will depend a great deal on what you plan on doing with your rifle. To pot a few Squirrels you're all set. If for shooting regular .22 bench rest at 50 yds. then you will have to do a LOT better. Under a 1/4" at that distance will be needed, and of course you'll put a 36x + scope on to. For Schuetzen we normally don't shoot at 50 yds. At 100 yds., which we normally shoot, if you could average 1" or a little under, with iron sights, you'll win your fair share of matches.
But, not many of our matches are shot with irons. Us old guys need a scope to see anything. So the groups you are getting at 50 yds., or better, would be needed at 100 yds. with a scope.
To put it into a little better perspective my new BRC Ballard #8 Union Hill .22 will hold at 5/8" to 3/4" at 100 yds. under most conditions using Ely Ultimate EPS, and my BSA MK IV will do the same with discontinued Federal UM1B. This of course with a 10x Unertl on board. I win a few matches with these guns but I don't shoot .22 bench (offhand mostly) all that much so get beat pretty regularly by those who use nothing but.
If you are familiar with the ASSRA's 100 yd. single or 6 bull target, I've shot a 247-7c with irons, which up to now is the top score. For scopes a 248-8c is the high score for the year so far. This means that 7 & 8 shots respectively were at least touching a 3/4" circle and the remaining shots were touching or inside 1 1/2". Well inside 1 1/2" if memory serves. Shooting scopes just for group size; groups for the .22 at 100 yds. run from .300" to 1.330" so far.
We also shoot bench, any sight, at 200 yds. and the top score so far is a 243-4c.
Hopefully this will give you an idea of what you need to do in order to be competitive at Schuetzen if that's your goal.

First of all, Pete is "Right On!" Here is the proof - the scores from the last two centerfire matches (just the .22 scores) and the entire line-up for the fall .22 only match. All shot at Etna Green. I deliberately left off the Spring .22 only match. It was so cold and the conditions so terrible that almost nobody shot.
All of this was found right here on the Forum. There is a wealth of information here if you will just "search" a bit.
Good shooting!
