I have posted a couple of comments about our nearest formal range.  Here behind the Redwood Curtain, level land is at a premium.  Our only formal range is a 200 yard affair near the ocean and on the north end of a bunch of sand dunes.  Because the range is near the ocean, we frequently have wind problems.  But Saturday was still (+/-) and foggy. I went mainly to practice with my Ballard gallery rifle, but took the Winder Musket along.  There is a 12-inch iron gong hung at the seaward edge of the 200-yard targets, and I decided to see if I could hit it with the Winder.  It took 23 graduations of elevation on the peep sight, but I eventually got to the point where I could get hits with every shot that sounded normal using CCI ".22 short target" ammo.  They did not all sound normal.  I tried some Winchester Super-X hollow points.  They got to the gong quicker but did not hit as reliably as the CCIs.  I tried some Federal Hi-Speed stuff.  It hit the sand dune most of the time.  All this made me think I'd like to try the Winder on bullseye targets at 200.    Has anyone tried that?

Shooting a Winder Musket indoors with .22 shorts is a revelation.  I thought my first shot was a misfire until I opened the block and an empty case popped out.  With the next (and succeeding) shots I paid more attention and heard a slight "ding" as the bullet hit the backstop...still no sound of discharge while wearing standard muffs.  Mine was pretty accurate too but had been refinished, so it got traded off in some deal that seemed real good at the time...my pet rimfire offhand rifle was also built on a 3rd Winder receiver, but that is another story and it has been told too many times already.
