Ken,
Man! You're giving me a headache trying to figure that out.
Most of the external scopes I'm familiar with, as you describe, go by this simple formula...... CCW is up & right.
But to your question....... The important point to remember is that the pivot point of externally adjusted scopes is on the front mount.
So if you move the back end of the tube down that would mean you would have to move the rear of the rifle up in order to realign the cross hairs.
This seems to be correct since with the "rule" in the first paragraph moving the top adjustment knob CCW would unscrew it, raising the rear of the tube. This would mean you would have to lower the rear of the gun in order to raise the sights back into alignment with the target.
As you say, moving the rear of the tube to the left will make the sights move left, since, by the rule above, that would mean screwing the knob in, or CW, thus moving the tube to the left, and the rear of the gun would have to be moved to the right in order to re-align the sights with the target.
This of course is all predicated on the idea that the crosshairs are located well behind the pivot point, which I believe they are. If they were located in front of the pivot point then all the above would be reversed.
So, if my thinking is right you're not screwy. But if I'm wrong then you've got company.
