.32-40 Tapered Bullets

Regarding the use of tapered bullets.  Are they best, and were they designed for use with a similarly tapered receiver chamber?  Or do they also function well with a non tapered chamber?
I know that black powder seems to set up (seat) a tapered bullet when fired, thinking appears to be that smokeless powder does not?
Any comments on this question or derections to an already discussed article on the subject would be most appreciated.

tapered bullets were designed for ease of breech-seating, they work just as well with smokeless or Bp. Normal chambers are used with these. Many persons did not not want to have there barrels throuted to breech-seat groove sized bullets, so a taper-bullet was the solution.

Agreed.  I have a tapered bullet mould for .30 caliber and it works fine for .30-06 (2 Springfields, but my Newton does not like it), or for .30-40s or 30-30s (Savage 99 & Win. 54) or in my 8.15 x 46R.  You do not need any special chamber.  Just remember that they are plain based bullets and will not stand much smokeless powder cooked off behind them.  And some guys think pan lubrication leaves something to be desired.  I suppose some of these imaginative gents have other ways to lubricate tapered bullets and maybe they will tell us how.

As has been mentioned tapered bullets can be used in standard or specially throated chambers.

My thinking is that throating should be done to exactly match the form of the bullet if you are going to breech seat. This will then exactly set the bullet into the barrel parallel with the bore and the required distance ahead of the case minus a very small amount so that seating can be done with a simple hand seater such as you've all seen old Ideal ads for. Top that off with a bump swage to square the bullet up and you'll get all the accuracy the guns capable of....... if you do your part of course!  Smiley

Waterman..... I don't understand where you have gotten the idea that pan lubing leaves something to be desired. A lot of top shooters do this even if they have straight sided bullets that could be run thru a luber-sizer.

But if that's a hassle for you tapered bullets can be easily lubed using a Pope style hand luber such as our own "Singleshot" makes.
