My 'Improved #9' in 35-30 M1873 has the same sight and they
are not easy to set at the range. Once you get it set for a
given load/at a given distance - it's probably a good idea to
mark the aperature height with a caliper and DON'T CHANGE
ANYTHING.
I can understand why the Maynard was popular back east -
the lack of a wood forearm would really discourage being left
in the Arizona sun....

I would like to know if there is anyone out there with any
loading experience with the 35/30 Maynard M1873.  I'm not
sure about original bullet weight used - but I gather I'm at 
least on the right track with a patched bullet as the barrel
has the shallow groove rifling.
I'm using #2 (3f) Swiss. So far a 240 gr bullet keyholes - so I
adjusted the mold to 212 (I was trying for 210)... hey - it's
close...   This is with 20:1 mix.
Bore is  .368 with no pits ; Patched bullets are at .367. and 
are a snug fit in the cases.

It goes BANG!! 

I got the Romano firing pin altered from 1882 length to 1873 length and made up a couple of cartridge cases using the John Bly supplied adapter rings and .30-40 Krag cases.  I fireformed them in the back yard and have loaded them to take to the range tomorrow for an actual shooting test.  The quest continues!   

BTW, for those who didn't see my other post, the new B&D mould that was delivered to me @ E-G Friday is a work of art!  Those bullets are almost too pretty to shoot, but I will!
