32-35 Stevens Information
Mar 14th, 2005 at 3:51pm
Print Post
Hello, anyone have any experience with loading the 32-35 Stevens, do not need exact loads but that would be nice, just some general knowledge of this cartridge. Looking at having a bad bore 25-20SS re-bored and chambered in this cartridge.
Thank You, MIKE-T  ???

I Had a friend who had a "ladies model" in 32-35, very nice cartridge, however brass is a problem-my dad used his Myford lathe to turn down 32-40 cases to fit his friends chamber-i think you would be much better off with a 32-40(unless you are putting it on a Stevens 44). Just rebember, it may be around forever, but you or me won't-a 32-40 would be much easier to dispose off in the furure.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

You can use .32 Win. Special cases to form the .32-35 Stevens cartridge. Any data used for the .32-40 will work fine in the .32-35 too.
Like singleshotman said, I wouldn't chamber a gun for this cartrdige, just because of the cost of dies, and the fact is the .32-40 is just a whole lot more desreable. But if you already have it, or are contemplating purchase of one in that caliber, I'd go for it.

marlinguy, looking at making a M44 Stevens with a rusted/worn out barrel into a shooter, was originally in 25-20SS. After much inspection and what measurements can be made, do not believe it will clean up to 28 Caliber (my first choice). Wanted one of the older original Stevens calibers and 32-35 fills that requirement, RMC and Buffalo Arms both have brass available, and by breech seating the bullets, may be able stay away from the die problem. But I'm sure that some kind neck sizing could be worked out with various standard dies. Barrel would be re-bored to .308" for the availability of moulds. Only problem seems to be the chamber reamer, the custom reamers do not come cheaply. Wanted to stay away from 32-40 for any future owner's sake, all the load data for the 32/35 appears to be low pressure and most of that for black powder, what very little is available.
Thanks for your input,
MIKE-T  Smiley

I make 32/35 cases for my #16 Maynard from any of the 32/40 family, including 38/55 and 32 Spl. Finally settled on 32/40 parent cases. ALL the family of cases are much too large at the base to fit the 32/35 chamber. Any cases I bought were turned at the base and up 3/8" or so from the rim. Sectioned, there wasn't much brass left on some cases. I had Clayton make a 3-hole swage die. FL size 32/40, trim close to finished length, size in 32/40 die without the shellholder-all the way in-knock out. Size the base in hole #1, then #2, then #3- all in a vise. Lubing and annealing and trimming and fire forming going on all the time. Open the primer pocket that was squoze down during forming. It takes about 8 hours of steady work to make 50 cases, the trick is to get them long enough-firing formed correct-length cases gets you cases that are .050"-.075" short. It ain't easy.
Why don't you just reline the barrel to 25/20 SS, the 44 Stevens isn't strong enough for a 32/40 or 32/35. (Think about that accidental double charge, and your eyes.)

I think i'd use a 32-35 on the 44 action, too.I'd rule out the 28-30, have you ever seeen how much case cap it has? I don't see how you could use Black powder in a 28-30 , and smokeless is much too dangerous in a 28-30-you could get in a TRIPLE charge. Still, i understand why so many 44 stevens end up as 22 rimfires-it seems the only solution.
I have a 44-1/2 in 38-55 and it's really hard to get the  brass in and out-how CPA makes a 45-70 i don't know-unless they make the whole action bigger?
The problem with the 32-40 and 38-55 is there is still a lot of HiVel sammo still floating out there-it won't blow it open but will bend the pins and the whole action would need to be rebuilt.

Singleshotman,

Really! You don't see how they can use BP in a .28/30? I do it all the time, plus use smokeless in it too. Just about any of the original CF BP cartridges can be double and triple loaded, so don't see how that has any bearing on the subject. The .28/30 was originally designed to be used with BP and was considered to be the equal in accuracy to the .32/40 in calm conditions. I'll be using mine for offhand shooting this year. It's a very pleasant caliber to shoot, altho I'm not sure I'd recommend it in a 44 action even tho it was originally chambered in that caliber by Stevens.

I want to thank everyone for the input so far, but i'd still like some basic low pressure loading data for the 32-35 cartridge! If anyone can help it would be appreciated.

Thanks, MIKE-T  Smiley Smiley Smiley

I'm shooting a Union Hill Ballard in 32-30. This is a very similar cartidge, and am using 11 gr of 5744 with a 160 gr bullet. A fellow shooter uses the same load with a 120 gr bullet in his Ballard. Both rifles give outstanding accuracy. FWIW

My best load for the 32/35 is 12.5/IMR4227, Remington 2 1/2 LP primer and a Hoch 165 grain bullet breech seated. In an iron sighted Model 16 Maynard it has worked fine up to 600 yards in calm weather. !0 shots chronographed 3/29/92 averaged 1395 fps, standard deviation was 8 fps. The alternative powder I've used is 10/AA#9.

Joe,  Are you shooting that rifle much these days?  That would be a good comparison to the modern .32/.357 that I will be using for our damaged bullet tests... 8)

Wish to Thank all you great SS shooters that helped me out with this 32-35 information. Will consider this round with a .308 size bore for mould availability! It will certainly be more fun than another 32-40.

Thanks again, MIKE-T  Smiley Smiley Smiley

Green Frog

Dear Green;
I don't shoot it much, I've been working on a M54 Winchester trying to get it going for the CBA Nationals-last year was the Savage 12 BVSS in 223-no success with cast. There are no local SS matches. I'm thinking of going to Palm Bay for their SS match on April 9/10? but they won't send me match info and it's 300 miles.
The Maynard has no scope blocks, strictly irons.
What comparison do you have in mind, I'm game for any experiment or comparison.
