Lubrisizer problems

I tried to lube some bullets today on an old Ideal lubrisizer, using SGP lube.  The bullets were not getting lube all around their circumference, and all the bands were not getting filled. When I applied more pressure on the lube with the wrence, I got a 1/4" pad of lube under the bullet. After a while, I had about 1/6th of a stick of lube that I had cleaned out from under the bullets. Is there a fix for this problem? Thanks! Joe S

This is not what you want to here but Pan lube them and then run them through your sizer.

Joe_S,

I've had this same problem from time to time. I've found two things that can cause this.

One..... the plug that slides up and down in the middle of the die is a little undersize. But, even if it's the proper size there is only so much pressure you can put on the screw before it will leak around the base. If you're handy you might try and machine a plug that fits better.

But mostly, depending on the diam. of the bullet you're sizing there is just no way that you can fill the grooves in one pass. What you need to do is put the pressure on normally, run the bullet down and up, turn it a quarter turn, apply a tad more pressure, and run it thru again. Once you get the hang of how much to turn it and the right pressure to apply you can run as many bullets as you want with no problem.

I normally do this last idea as a matter of course for all my bullets. If you think about it, from what you're experiencing, you will get to wondering even if the grooves look like they are evenly filled, do the grooves have the same amount of pressurized lube all the way around? It would seem to me that if the grooves aren't evenly filled they will tend to collapse unevenly as the lube is applied to the bore.

Many of the newer sizing dies don't have enough holes in them, especially the newer RCBS dies. Locate the areas that need filling and accordingly drill-ream-polish additional holes in the correct locations of the die body. Keep them about the same size as the others and don't worry about having one or two too many. Works for me.
